tr8 gas filling troubles

Postby Ray Campbell » 30 Jul 2008 19:22

Do all these TR7's and 8's have trouble filling the gas tank? the filler tube is smaller than the pump tube,it takes forever to fill up. Any solutions out there? RayC

i dont know if your pumps are the same as this side of the pond but
over here i find that if i put the end of the nozzle on to the metal bar that goes across the filler tube then it stops delivery after a few seconds i find that backing off the nozzle a bit gives a more free flow and fills just fine
hopefully this is the same problem your having if so hope it helps

although if you mean that the nozzle is fatter than your filling tube then................a funnel maybee

It rides again

My TR 7 has a very wide filler tube - and easily takes the full bore flow of even the 'fast fill up' pumps! Don't understand your problem - has someone fitted a filter in the neck - or maybe an anti-syphon device ?

No problem here either. Check "bmcecosse" suggestions.

You could take off the little cover plate in the boot and inspect the connecting tube - it may be non-standard and have a kink in it ?
Other possibility is non standard tank with smaller neck ?

Ray,

No trouble filling my 1980 DHC TR7. I do have to fill it slower, not full bore filling, but no real issues.

Of course my gauge only ever reads 3/4 after a fill up...[:I]

I find that as tank fills,air/vapour is trying to vent around the
nozzle, which can cause spluttering and pump to stop.As Gaz suggests,
i back nozzle off a little and fill a bit slower, this seems to help.
I've found this happens with both my wedges, they both have that bar
to stop syphoning. Also, have you guys found a way to stop your nozzle
dribbling on withdrawal so you dont leave a deposit around the hole!?

See ya. Paul

Just give your 'nozzle' a gentle shake - and it won't dribble !!!!!!!!!!!

If your having problems with filling your tank, I'd have a look at
your breather, your vapour separator, or even the line to the
absorption canister.

If the air can't get out that way, it's got to come back up the
filler, even if you do shake the nozzle.

To prevent "drip" I let it sit for a moment then twist the handle with the nozzle over the hole much like twisting up a bottle of Champange (or Baby Duck) to prevent and elixer dripping down the bottle. A trick I used when filling the Gas tank on my '68 Triumph Daytona back in the day.

Mine will click off if you try to pump at full speed but it's not that much of an issue. My only problem is paying for the stuff!![:(]

You think it's expensive? We are now paying ~ $ 2.50 per litre, that's ~ $10 for a US gallon - about £6 for an imperial gallon.
