TR* Fuel Tanks

Postby styler1 » 26 Jul 2008 16:22

Hello and greetings from a new member to this site, Styler1.

I'm hopeful that someone can help me w/ some information concerning sourcing for a replacement fuel tank for my 1980 carburated TR8.

NOS, remanufactured, or used but sound are all open to consideration if they can be found in eitherthe USA or Canada. I would prefer not to have to import from UK

It might also be helpfull to know that I reside in Waterford Township, about 40 miles northwest of Detroit MI.

If any of you would have some suggestions, I would be most appreciative for them.

Regards,

Styler1

New TR7 fuel tanks in UK are made by T D Fitchett - they have the press tools! Expensive here and obviously expensive to export. You may find it's easier/cheaper (and longer lasting) to simply install a 'racing' fuel tank from any of the motorsport supply companies.

If you go to this site you may find what you are asking for.

I have seen two companys that do re-conditioning of fuel tanks. One is Re-Nu and the other escapes me at the moment.

Will get back to you on the other one.

I believe Woody keeps reconditioned ones on an exchange basis. I'd check with him.

In the US Pacific NW a company called Precision Radiator reconditions fuel tanks. The actual work is done at their facility in Tacoma, Washington.

Greetings styler1, and welcome to the forum!
First off, I have a spare gas tank for a carbed TR (it actually came off a TR7, but should be the same as on TR8's), only the Fuel Injected tanks were different.I may be interested in selling it.
Second, I live in Lake Orion, about 10 minutes from Waterford.
Third, there is a shop in Lake Orion that will clean and line your existing tank, I know people that have had it done there and they are happy with it.I don't have the name of the shop, but I know they are on Clarkston Road, just west of M-24.

Why not buy a TR7 tank from Victoria British and drill the second hole and tig weld on the retaining ring (off old tank) for the fuel pump and you'd have a TR8 carbed tank.

What's the second hole for - if it's a carb engine ? carbs don't usually have a fuel return - only PI units.

TR7 and TR8 gas tanks are not the same. TR8 carbed and TR8 fuel injected tanks, I'm real sure are not the same. TR8 fuel injected and TR7 fuel injected tanks are the same.

TR7 carbed engines have the fuel pump on the engine, hence one hole tanks, one hole for the fuel line and sending unit.
TR8 carbed engines have the fuel pump in the tank, hence two hole tanks, one for sending unit and one for the fuel pump
TR7 and TR8 fuel injected tanks, might have some type of swirl pot or similar device in them. (no first hand knowledge though)

You can put a TR7 tank in a TR8, but why bother, you can use a hole saw on a brand new TR7 tank, cut a new hole, drill out the spot welds on the old tank or even another TR7 tank, to get the retaining ring off and tig or mig weld it to the new tank with the new hole and no one will be the wiser. I would not waste my money rebuilding a old tank when a new tank is available and easily modified to work perfectly in a TR8 carb car. I actually think some one could make money modifying these new TR7 tanks and selling them as TR8 carbed tanks. The last brand new TR7 tank I bought off Ebay was $25. It's not like they are not out there. Victoria British has them for $400, still a good deal. I usually put a new tank in my cars just as a matter of principle, I don't want a 30 old tank in a redone car. YMMV

Surely much easier to just use an external fuel pump for the V8 carb engine ?

The TR8 pump situated in the tank is very reliable dont change it, as described above it is quite easy to modify a TR7 tank to use on a TR8.

Yes -but I meant if fitting a V8 engine to a TR7 - an external pump must be simpler.
