mistaken identity

Postby dave.c » 25 Jul 2008 18:21

Hi All
As the Triumph brand has'nt been around for quite some time now people dont recognise the TR7.
I often get asked what it is or people have there own wrong guesses
I had my wheels balanced at quick-fit they must of seen the Triumph
Badges as they had it for an hour but my bill says TVR Tasmin
so I wondered what other people had mistaken your Wedges for.

LOL. I find that if anyone takes an interest in my car it is the "older" generation who readily identify the car as a TR7, but those who are younger than the car often guess at it being a TVR.

Could this be a symptom of failing reading skills in the younger generation - can't read the name on the boot lid correctly[:D]

Probably they have to select the car from a list in the computer - and that was the nearest 'T' they could find.

Well I've got just the picture to compare the two cars. Was taken on a visit from my mate Ash in his dad's Tasmin [:)] I must say though looking at the wheels that were on KBA then, I am glad she's on her alloys now... anyway the pic:

I think at time we thought the Tasmin looked a bit like a 7 on steroids [:p] but that said I wouldn't be able to confuse the two personally!!

"Is that some kind of Datsun?" was the latest question I received about my 7. Sheesh. And this guy does auto body work for a living. In his defense though all labels had been removed from the car.

Had one person ask if it was a Dodge. Probably confused it with a Stealth?

I have been accused of driving a Maserati, I the switch girl, at the
largest classic car insurance co, in Oz, tried to transfer me to the
motor bike department. Not so good training, I would say.

Interestingly that model of TVR owes its existence to the TR7. Something went on between Leyland and TVR when the TR8 was going out of production. I believe a TR8 was taken to TVR for them to strip down, learn how it went together and assemble their own similar looking version.

In David Knowles TR7 book he details something surprisingly similar going on with DeLorean but they went out of business before it ever happened.

Youre right John, the actual TR8 used by TVR is still in existance but its whereabouts is unknown.

Many years ago I gave a work colleague a lift in to work when I spotted him at a bus stop.

He thought it was a Fiat X/19.

He took the bus every day after that.

When I'd just picked mine up back in '99, some guy at a petrol station asked me if it was one of the new Merc's. Can't say that I'm sure he was sober as I don't think Mercedes had been making cars with black plastic bumpers for some time - in fact, probably ever, now that I come to think about it. I can only think he meant the SLK, although I fail to see much similarity, apart from having 2 seats & 4 wheels!

A couple of years later, someone asked me if it was a Porsche. Doesn't look like any Porsche ever made either...
