Hi All,

Great site been a member for the last 3 years but my first post, reason being bought my first TR7 12 years ago I was lead my heart and not brain bought a rot box (looked good though) then bought a semi restored auto with god body for peanuts so I could re shell.
Chopped up the old one but never got round to actually re-shelling it.
Any way to cut a long story short I last month bought a TR7 DHC off ebay for what I thought a reasonable price. She has only done 55k and is structually solid (well happy).

Well the question. There are many thread on fitting MGF alloy wheels but nothing definative.

1. Are they a straight fit or do you need spacers??

2. Originally they come with the profile 185 at the front and 205 at the rear. what is the best option 185 or 205 all round or as they come with 185/205.

I am just looking at what is the answer as many of you have fitted them and the standard wheel trims to put it politely look crap!!!!

I haven't done the job - but I believe they fit straight on with 'maybe' some slight fettling of the centre hole so they can fit snuggly on the hub. Someone will be along in a minute who has done it!

Gareth - the MGF alloys will fit straight on. They are one of the few modern alloys that have the correct PCD of 95.25mm to fit the TR7 hub. I have not heard of anyone having to use spacers.

They come in 15" with a 6J width, & 16" with a 7J width. Most people use the 15" "minilite" style as they are relatively easy to find at a good price, but AFAIK all the styles will fit.

Points to note are that the offset is different to the standard TR7 wheel, & the centre bore hole is very slightly smaller than the hole on the TR7 wheel, so some people have this machined out.

I've got 195 tyres all round on mine (15") but I think 205 will fit if you want them.

Just be aware that if you fit the 16 inchers, the tyres MAY rub on the arches at the rear because of the 7 inch width. The other point about the 16 inch wheels on the MGF is that they carried 215 rubber - front and rear.

15" x 7" rims will allow you to fit up to 215/50s without rubbing but I've gone with a 225 on the back which has a slight rub at the 10 o'clock point of the arch on the bigger pot holes round town. The same tyre on the front would pull the lip at the top of the arch which was a complete nuisance.

The TR7 offset is 25mm, the MGF is 30 or 35mm depending on the actual style of wheel used.

Excellent - now we know !! Maybe this thread should be a 'sticky' ?

So what size tyres....Just bought a set of the minilite wheels...but the 205 50 15 looks to be a bit small ?? I plan on going with a 205 55 15 size tyre, unless anyone can tell me why I shouldn't...

Currently have 175 60 (i think) on 14 " minilite wheels..

Martin - your speedo will underread by 3.5% at 60 mph - i.e. it will show 58mph at a true 60. Not disasterous, but worth bearing in mind when flirting with the revenue cameras!

Just one comment re Peter's statement that 215/50's on a 15x7 will fit without rubbing.

This is not necessarily true!

I've got 205/50's on 15x7's and had to get the rear wheel arch lips rolled up to stop the off-side rear rubbing.

The car is straight with fully refurbished suspension, so that wasn't the cause of the rubbing on one side. Revington TR did the work on the arches and did some comparisons against other 7's in their yard which had a similar slight asymetry to the bodywork at the back end.

Basically, it seems that some cars will take wider tyres than others without contact to the arches. So check it out first!

If it only rubs one side - not the car is not true!! The axle (or rear end) must be off centre.
For information - my 195/65 x 14 tyres are close but don't rub - and the speedo reads high by 9% all through the range. ie 109 mph is really only 100 mph!
