Postby cook » 16 Jul 2008 23:17

I just want to know how light you can get a street legal FHC TR7? Is it possible to get it to weigh around 1900-2000Lbs?

Mine is street legal and is used for drag racing.
Last time i weighed it, it was 1025kg, which is about 1800lbs.
Still has 2 seats, heater, trim, but very little carpet.

There is always the fiberglass options with the boot, bonnet and wings, not too sure what else you can get in GRP these days.
Taking out the trim and the other seat will help get the weight down.

I'd never use GRP wings as the original steel wings on a TR7 are structural

Throw away the heater and spare tyre - and any junk in the boot. Smaller fuel tank - smaller battery, smaller alternator and starter. Light weight seat and of course NO trim or carpet anywhere -and change the windows to perspex. Aluminium boot and bonnet - maybe door skins too. But yes - I would stick with the steel wings. Obviously the bumpers are very heavy - either remove them completely - or remove the steel inners and just leave the outer 'shell'. Headlight mechs are heavy too - remove everything that's not necessary and lift them manually when required - or just fix them up all the time.

Sorry, I've confused myself.
A 1,000kg is a metric tonne and 1,750lbs is an imperial tonne.
You can add to the list aluminium radiator, brake calipers and even flywheel depending on what use the car is put to.
But i would start with the bumpers because they are flipping heavy.
P.S. I think the factory TR8 was around the 1,100kg mark, so i am pleased with 1,025kg. Oh yeah, no power steering on my car aswell.
P.P.S. Aluminium spare wheel for road car? The list goes on.

Over here the heater is part of the MOT so if you want to use the car on the road the heater must be retained.

When I put the bucket seats in 't Kreng I weighed the original seats, they were 14.5kg each. Lost me just over 20 kg.
Radio/CD player and speakers nearly 10 kg ...
Sound deadening material together is ±25kg.

I like the idea of alloy skins for boot, bonnet and doors [:)]
