When I press down to flick wipe the window sometimes not all the time (but most of the time)

They stay on and the only way to stop them is to switch off the engine

I know Phil has the same problem and he is going to attempt it at the weekend

But can anybody give us some pointers what the problem is

Have been told it is the wiper park position if so where is this adjustment located

And is it hard to do ?

Stevie - it is likely to be the 'park' switch - which is on the underside of the motor - same as a Mini. It may just be jammed - a good clean could fix it. I think they are quite 'fragile' - so go carefully!

Hi Stevie - You may recall we met briefly at Billing!

My wipers have a similar problem: they don't always stop 'On Command' but carry on wiping until they think they will. Sometimes a quick dab - in the downwards direction - seems to remind them whose supposed to be boss.

I've never had to resort to turning the engine off, and they've never stopped when they're supposed to be working - YET!

The parking switch needs a small adjustment. I'll tell you the procedure on LHD car, not sure what would change for RHD. Take out battery and washer bottle. (everything is on the right hand side in LH car.) Take out metal strip that anchors wiper motor and remove rubber cover. Remove wiper arms, wheel box nuts so the wiper motor moves a little to get stubby phillips in by firewall to slightly loosen two screws that secure parking switch. Move switch towards fender (wing). Tighten screws and replace stuff removed. Wipers should stop. If not switch might haved to be moved a little more. It's not hard just a little fiddley.

This assumes the actuating arm that is riveted to the wiper rack (which contacts the nylon cam that moves the switch) isn't broken.

Thanks for that, F1. I would have started to source the problem by taking the plastic shroud off the steering column...

It's usually best to hang fire and seek a second opinion before getting over-enthuiastic with a tool-box!

I've had this problem several times and I find a good grease up of the sliding plastic thingy in the wiper motor sorts it out. This gets dry over time and then apparently stops sliding as it should which then means the wipers are stuck on.

In reply to John;s message above I did the same thing and also with the long gear thingy that joins up with the wiper blades and makes them move; that made the wipers run smoother and quieter as well - so far and when the car is going!

No it's adjustable, two brass screws in slots. Did this adjustment when I soldered my actuating arm at a slight angle (impossible to get it exact) changing the timing of parking switch making. The wipers continued to wipe. Adjusted the switch a "tich" and they work fine now. Single wipe works right also.

Oooh well - I had assumed it was identical to Mini wiper motor (it looks same) where the switch just clips in. Of course most Minis are newer - maybe the newer wiper motors were 'simplified' !
