Now I have had chance to drive the car I have noticed that the steering is heavy,a little clunky and there is play in the steering wheel up and down. Any Ideas?.

It's not uncommon for the bushing through which the shaft passes in the bulkhead to crumble. Could be your problem Replacement plastic bushings are available from Rimmer Brothers...

The stiff steering could be down to need for grease in the rack and the track rod ends - but also check the two little universal joints twixt wheel and rack - they could be seized. try soaking them in release oil. Steering column movement will require new bushes.
