Y2K Tour

Postby FI Spyder » 08 Jun 2008 07:00

Here's a treat for you guys. Thought I'd post it here rather than chat. Club went on a Y2K Tour. T2K is a spitfire restoration of a 442 Squadron now based in comox. This plane built in 1944 did not see any combat action but a picture taken at the time of an engine replacement included an engineer that lived in Cambell River just a few miles north. He Helped start the restoration but is now dead. The pilot of this very same plane now lives in Victoria 130 miles south. He still has his log books and they hope to get him up there before he passes away. How is this for coincidence. The plane was sold to South africa after the war where it had a "hard landing" in '51 or '52 and was scrapped where it sat for 30 years as pieces of metal. 10 years and $600,000 they just got to this point. They now have a backer for the $1.5 million balance it will take to complete by 2010. After completeing flying tests it will be operating out of Ottawa. Spitfires only operated in Canada for cold weather testing. None flew on the west coast.
