Spraying soft top roof frame.

Firstly why did nobody tell me what a god awful job it is to try to refurb the hood (dhc roof)frame. The one I am using is off a late 81 car and a few days ago I thought it was about time to takle it as my resto is now only about 4/5 weeks from completion. Firtly I thought I could rub it down whilst assembled but after an hour it was obvious I was pi###ng into the wind with that one. So it was dissasembled and each item was rubbed down individually and sprayed with red oxide. This was allowed to harden off for a couple off days in a warm room and last night it was time to reassemble it. Then I stopped because I could not decide if it was better to spray it whilst seperate or assembled. It looks like it was factory sprayed whilst assembled as the paint it thicker around the plastic bushes with no paint at all behind them and I cant see how you could tighten up the nuts without damaging the paint.
Any suggestions.
If it doesn't fit you obviously need a bigger hammer.
