Rover RHD power steering rack for TR8 conversion

Hi Folks, I'm going to be in the UK in June, and I'd REALLY like to be able to pick up a RHD Rover PAS rack which is of the type I can use to convert a TR8 PAS rack to RHD. If somebody can help me out with the specific part numbers I need & where I can go to get one (or if anybody has one in their parts stash they would be willing to part with) - Please let me know.

Thanks.

Well Huw, I'm not sure if this is the right part but take a look here:

http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/rimmer/rove ... a/steering

By way of short explanation, Rimmers have a whole boatload (literally) of Rover SD1 parts that they repatriated from India, not that long ago. All these parts were rescued from a factory that had been set up to assemble the SD1 in India, but the project flopped & for many years this huge pile of parts was just locked away in a disused factory.

These PAS racks are from the right era, & while they are not going to fit straight into a TR8 they may be what you need for the conversion. Maybe someone else can offer advice on the suitability.

Huw, The Indian SD1 rack is not suitable for the TR8 RHD rack conversion. The one you need is for the early UK spec SD1, I will get you the part number this week.

Hi,
Those top lads at S+S Preperation have developed a electric PAS system,(a lot of BMW's are going over to this type of set up as did the MGF ) not cheap though but the cost reflects the work involved i would say in fairness. Anyone tried it [?]

I was at S&S recently and was offered a 'feel' of their electric power steering. Albeit anly a lean through the window and a wiggle it felt good and light(well you could move the wheel easily and you certainly couldn't do that normally).

Might like to persue that conversion.

I like the whole concept of an electrical assisted power steering conversion like what S&S Offers - couple of major problems for me:

1) Cost - with the current US to Sterling exchange rate, I can buy a genuine TR8 for what that conversion costs.

2) It's not offered as a DIY setup - and since I'm in Seattle, WA - It just ain't going to happen.

Having tried/compared the S&S conversion against my own factory TR8 side by side the feel is about the same however the S&S conversion doesn't turn as quickly and positively as the original pas. They were looking for a quicker rack to fix this but I don't think they have one yet. A nice conversion and alternative given RHD racks are so rare. Another plus side is it won't sap engine power via a pump as the original one does given it's electrical.

Hi, I completely aggree with Rconnew in that if you electrify the original rack it remains a very slow ponderous drive. I have re-installed a SD1 rack in my V8 Grinnall and the difference is truely amazing. Obviously much easyer at slow speeds but so much more responsive when on the move. Even if you electrify the old rack you could still not physically turn the wheel fast enough to compete with such a quick rack as the SD1's - about 2.7 turns lock to lock.
Not sure how you could fit one of these on a 2 litre car but then anything is possible especially given the price of an electric conversion.
Hope this was of use - of course this is only my opinion !
