Around the filler cap

You know where the petrol cap is...there is a black plastic bit which goes around the hole where it screws on to make it look good and blend in with the cap. I found mine isn't even screwed in - 3 screw holes and inside the hole thing is really rusty and looks like water just sits in it. How on earth can I treat this and where is the water meant to go once it goes into this crevice? There must be a drain. Cheers. Really daft place to put a filler cap.

That's been discussed a bit on here:

But I'll agree, I've got the same problem on mine. Even worse, I've got an old bodged repair to deal with as well.
I'll be doing some work on this in a couple of weeks, I'll let you know how I get on.

The screws thread into the flange on the pipe leading to the tank. As far as the location, It's sort of a Triumph thing to me. If you look at the older TRs, they all had the filler on the rear H deck.

You're right - it is not a good design.
Malcolm Paris picked up a car that has the following solution based on an Aero cap from Newton Equipment

It looks fab, ie:
It requires mods to the metal. Here is my approach:

Hi Owen, long time no see.
I must be getting old & dumb, but I can't tell from your photo where
your filler is going.
How is the V8 comming along, & how's life in general.

So you're saying that when this plastic is screwed in, it should seal around it so water goes inside it and drops through in a hole in the ground? Maybe it's bunged up, I'll have a look when I get the car back! It's still having it's head gasket done...

Hi Hasbeen,
Life has been a bit yo-yo like over the last 6 months or so. I am just trying to get started again with the V8 project. Bought a new aluminum fuel tank this week from Triumph Rover Spares in Adelaide. It is set up for FI with pump in tank. Next step is to get the Skyline diff modified and then I can get the shell off the spit.
The following two pics show more of the fuel neck approach:
Let me know if you want more details.

Those Newton Filler caps look very smart! [^] especially on electric blue paint.
I'm not sure if I'd go to the trouble of fitting one though as my filler cap area is corrosion free.
Cheers,

If you do fit one, check if the fuel cap is vented or not.
If not you can connect the tank vent pipe to a one way valve, on mine I have put this in a clip attached to the bracket you can see in the photo above.
