Power Steering - an admission

<font color="green">I can hear the groans now, and the "not that agains" but this post is not the usual where can I get it etc.

Those of you who have been around for a while will know that when the topic comes up I have been inclined to make comments along the lines of "try before you buy if you can" as I have found the power steering on my TR7v8 too light and vague, especially at speed, compared to the non power steering 2l 7. It has always been that way ever since I bought it. On a recent tour in the Lake District it seemed to be getting even worse than usual and so I resolved that, even though it has sailed throgh the last two MoTs, it needed to be checked out. So last week it was left with the guys at Robsport for a thorough check of the steering and front suspension. They found one or two "issues" and sorted them. I have picked the car up this morning and I have to say that on the 30 mile drive home it was very much improved. It now goes exactly, rather than vaguely, where you point it both on the country lanes and at speed on the motorways (no more than 70, honest officer). It's a great test route between Bedford and Robsport which includes just about every type of road if you go the right way.

So I just wanted to say that I may have been maligning the factory power steering in my previous comments - although I still remain unconvinced that a 7 actually "needs" it other than at parking speeds.</font id="green">

I have to say that I was always puzzled when you said you were not a great fan. I have always felt that the factory power steering setup was a great achievement as I consider it to have the right balance between weight and feel. Glad to hear you have a much improved setup now.

I have had factory pas on 3 cars...gen uk rhd dhc, gen lhd fhc which was then converted to rhd using gen rhd pas rack. They all drove a little different, the best and sharpest being the fhc before conversion to rhd. Mind you, now it's rhd it has 7" x 13" Minilites with lower profile tyres thus reducing the rolling radius and sidewall "bounce".

As an aside apparently I had someone in my shop last week (I wasn't there at the time) who said that they had just bought a TR7 for their wife but due to the heavy steering she was unable to drive it.
