Turn signals

Postby mb4tim » 19 Apr 2008 01:35

After looking through the archives, I still have a question.

On my 81, my left turn signals work (slowly) and the rights come on, but don't blink.

Are there 2 separate relays (left adn right), or should I look for something else? Plus they don't blink unless the car is running.

The alternator and the battery are both new, so let's not go there...LOL.

And, are the brake lights supposed to work when the key is off? Mine don't, but are fine when the key is on.

THANKS!!!

No, brake lights are connected to the Ignition RUN switch position, so
no they don't illuminate when key switch if OFF. At least thats how
my car is wired.

As for the turn signals, they share the same flasher relay unit.
For the unit to operate correctly, there must be an electrical load.
If the left flashing happens, but not the right. Check all right
side turn indicator lamps front and back. Us an Ohm meter to insure
they are Grounded correctly. The instrument cluster right turn
icon is only 100mA and isn't enough to heat the bi-metalic
filament in the flasher relay (the older flasher types) to get the
cycling to happen. My car had very poor Ground connections to the
rear tail lamp assemblies.

On the wiring diagram, the turn flasher relay output feeds into the
turn signal stalk which selects which group gets flashed - right or left.

On my car, the turn indicators flash 1 time every 1.5 seconds.
The hazard indicator, is a different flashing relay, and flash rate
is almost 1 to 2 time per second (noticeably faster).

You should check your car for dodgy connections and grounding of all the various indicator lights...

It's possible to rewire this (I know a friend who's done this.) if it's needed to be able to light up the
brake lights independent of the position of the ignition key...
