Front Bumper

Postby johnny5 » 07 Apr 2008 10:05

I have a DHC which is undergoing a body restoration.
Some time, in the ancient history of my car it had been in a front end shunt and the front bumper was replaced with one from a FHC. I will be replacing it with the correct type but I was wondering why the bumper had been redesigned for the convertible. I remember reading some were that the weights in the bumper corners were there to counter scuttle shake but not sure what that means.
A mate, who had a drive of my car, compared it to driving an old Landover. I have to admit it did shake and rattle quite a bit, could that have any thing to do with the bumper.

Just done a search and found 2 threads relating to the above. It seems that swapping the bumpers makes no difference but looks better. Its to late for me to change back to fitting the DHC bumper, I’ve already had both, front and rear bumpers sand blasted and painted. The metalastic mount look in good condition. The weight have been removed, so I’ll leave them off and hope the bumper doesn’t suffer from the dredged droop.

The dredged droop, as you put it, is built into the fixing of the dhc front bumper.
It was put there to give space for the amplitude of the weighted ends moving up (and down).
If you've discarded the two 4kg weights already you can just as well fit (the aluminium replacements
for the metalastic blocks) that TR7IG sells. They're just having a new batch done - contact Andreas
Dittiger if you want a set. Then you shim the bolts, and bang the pivot, into a more horizontal angle.

FWIW, I know you fellas have different bumpers than the US cars. What I and others interested in performance have done is fit the FHC bumpers on on our DHC cars. They are lighter and eliminates the weights and pivot arangement. I even went further and lightened the back bar buy cutting some large holes where they don't show. I can't say I saw much if any difference in shakes or rattles. Just seems dumb to hang all that extra wieght out at the worst possible place on a sportscar. I have the uprated springs and the front and it looked to be plowing into the earth with a lot of neg camber. During this last rebuild, I also removed the AC and power steering components. I have not refit the bumpers or bonnet yet but the car already looks to sit at a much more reasonable height.
