What have you got on underneath ?

Postby Dave Dyer » 05 Apr 2008 18:35

Hi All,

I've just painted the underneath of my car, but I'm not sure what final product to use over the paint. This must be something everyone encounters at some stage ?

So I was wondering what everybody else has on the underneath of their car ?

All the TR7's I've owned in the past have had a bitumus sealant applied, except my Premium which strangely just had factory black paint. So that leads to another question, how did the cars leave the factory ?

So what do have underneath, bitumin, wax, some special paint, please let me know ?

Thanks, Dave

Dave,i'm in the process of doing this at the moment. While i'm doing
the diff and back axle, bushes etc.,i decided to go the whole hog and
clean the rear underside of the car.Luckily there is no major rust in
those awkward, hard to get to places - behind trailing arms and bars.
This is because 4 years back when i put the car through a bit of a
light resto',i painted everything black with a rust inhibitor, then i
liberally sprayed every where (mask the bits you dont want coated)
with underbody sealant spray. The one i use is by Carplan and called
Tetroseal.A couple of heavy coats of that and you wont need to worry
about the 'nether regions' for a while!I am spraying some smooth
black Hammerite on the arms and bars now. When their bushed b/4 back
on the car,i'll mask bushes and Tetroseal them too,to be sure,to be sure!

See ya. Paul

this was always something that was very high on my list of things to do although when the guy's at the first garage had finished welding they shultz'ed everything before i had chance still looks uniform and black but i would have preffered to use rust eater/prevention instead........
one day maybee i'll tackle the job of removing it and start again but for now it can stay i belive it can be a bit of a bugger to get off

It rides again

Mine has the bitumen undercoating but don't know if it was dealer or factory installed. It has come off in a few spots, one spot was one of the round discs in the floor, still a bright shiney silver (on the bottom side yet.) Where it was worn off the under side of the body you could see it was covered with a clearish brown coating (hard surface)from the factory. On RH side on the outrigger where the jack goes (and lifts usually contact) that brown coating was worn off (no rust) so I POR-15'd it and recoated with Undercoating. I still have to scrape some loose hard bitumen off and reapply. I'm hoping to waxoil the sills and frame portions of monocoque before it goes back on the road. The trunk area by the wheel wells were waxoiled the only area on the car that had been. The sill area under the trim was sprayed with black anti chip coating (rather crudley with ripples and drips at the bottom.) It was made at the Rover factory in July 1980.

Since my 82 is original and family owned since new, I have a pretty good idea what is factory issue at least on this particular unit, and my undercarriage, door and trunk interiors, plus the inside of the luggage lid and hood were all shot with a brownish colored thick undercoat (perhaps the bitumus sealant you've referred too?) The diff, trailing arms, suspension and frt cradle were all painted black.

As my car is mostly a road car, but since I'm anal for neatness, and wash my chassis regularly , I have since resprayed all the black parts with tremclad and the underside with a spray-on blackish undercoat/gravel guard. Most of the excess inner panel undercoat around the door/hood/trunk frames was cleaned off to reveal the painted surfaces, as I find it more appealing.....

Mind you if I was ever to rotisserie my car, I'd prolly give in and strip all the undercoat off , and just respray everything related to the uni-body in the same bodycolour as the topside, and properly trim all the bolt-on suspension ect in black hammerlite.

Ron.

Quite a few years ago a friend brought a absolute original and rustfree TR7 over from the States (I think it was from California).
Car had only some chalk marks on the underside of the car, with a tiny bit of paint spray ...

When I restored 't Kreng I used an anti chip coating (Scotch) over the primer layers and over that went the paint. Still looks good after more then 10 years ...
