Electrical terminal cleaning

Postby mahanson57 » 31 Mar 2008 14:44

This post is to pass along a good tip I recieved from the chap from whom I bought my new starter. I had trouble with the starter, so I called and asked about connections. He asked me if I new how to clean a connection...as I began to speak (two words I think), he barked "NO! let me tell you!" I humbly remained silence as I listened and learned. Anyway, here you go:

Take a coffe mug of very hot tap water and add two tablespoons of baking soda, and "one of your grandmother's pinches of table salt." Place the offending connector into the mug for about five minutes. He told me it would be very effective in removing the oxidation, and that capillary action would actually work goodness back up the wire. I sprayed it with connection cleaner to remove the solution, and coated with dielectric grease. Presto chango...it worked. I'm now going to start working connectors all over the wedge.

Kind of makes sense in some situations. Baking soda and water makes a basic solution to counteract any acidic chemical components. I have often used it in the past to clean battery terminals on old type batteries that weren't of the sealed technologies. The basic solution would counter the green acidic build up. Haven't tried it on oxided connections though. Worth a try to see what happens.
