Ebay warning

Postby samco » 27 Jan 2008 20:55

Last year I bought from ebay an uprated brake master cylinder and servo which was supposed to have been refurbished. It has beed dry stored since last summer then and fitted to my car just before xmas. Yesterday I tried to bleed the brakes but it didn't feel right and it wouldn't bleed. The first time I pressed the pedal it was solid and felt like the pistons were seized in the bore, but after a bit of gentle pressure it did give. However no fluid was drawn into the cylinder whilst bleeding. I left it overnight and today was dismayed to find that fluid had leaked from the joint between the cylinder and the servo! It had run down the face of the servo and over my freshly painted bulkhead and stripped it to bear metal. Reluctantly I removed to cylinder for a closer inspection and found a true horror story. Firstly the rubber boot that seals the end of the cylinder was missing. Then it was apparent that when the retaining circlip was removed the first piston was seized halfway down the bore and it was encrusted with thick rust. Once it was finally removed with lots of persuasion I removed the second piston and the whole assembly including pistons springs spacers etc were encrusted with thick rust. Not what you would expect from a refurbished item. I spent over an hour trying to clean up the bore of the cylinder but it was too heavily pitted and is only good for scrap. It looked like it had been sat in a breakers yard for years from the inside but from the outside it had been made to look profesionally rebuilt with a fresh coat of paint. I will not name the ebay seller but this person has sold many of these as I had bid on many until I won mine and have seen them listed recently so god knows how many of these death traps have been sold. There is no way mine had been stripped and cleaned let alone had new seals fitted so I would advise you to steer clear of this seller and only buy new. I understand that it is a case of buyer beware especially on ebay but this is more than just being ripped off. Had this item just worked enough to get the car on the road it would have soon failed and the concequences do not bear thinking about.

If it doesn't fit you obviously need a bigger hammer.

Hi Samco,
I have a horrible feeling i too may have brought from the same ebayer [:0] brakes seem fine and have a good pedal at the moment, but, i know he has sold alot of these servo master cylinder kits, they appear to be Sherpa in origin [?] Going to pull my cylinder of the front and have a look inside [V]
Gutted to hear about your paint work but releived it went now and not when you really need your brakes.
We cant be the only 2 with this conbination.
Cheers John.

I sold a few of these back in about 2003/4. The ones I sold where from a Sherpa and advertised for reconditioning purposes. I think I shifted about 4 if I remember rightly. Anyway, my ebay user name is and always has been randyreindeer. Im pretty sure I can plead not guilty on this one.

Yes this is the guy stricky so randy raindeer you are in the clear. I had lost all of his info as after a certain length of time ebay remove it from your system. I couldn't beleive my luck when I saw his latest listing, so I have emailed him and asked for a responce and what if anything he is prepared to do. It could of been a genuine mistake and this one could of slipped through the net, if this is the case I am sure I will get a replacement. If he is a rip off merchant and refuses to do the right thing I will let you know.

If it doesn't fit you obviously need a bigger hammer.

I was going to fit new seals and sell them. When I did my V8 conversion I fitted one of these along with four pot calipers. When I bought the new seals for my own i decided against buying others because of the price and sourcing them wasn't easy either.
It did make a hell of a difference to the brakes though.

Just looked at the link. It looks a good bit of kit. The ones I sold where as they came of the Sherpa. Rusty and dirty looking.

I have what I think is a Sherpa master and servo. Can anyone tell me the proper seals to purchase for it? I am in the States and Rimmers do not offer seal kits. Seems odd seeing as they sell the master/servo.

Good news, this morning I had a responce from the person who supplied the master cylinder and he has offered to replace it with another one and a new set of seals. Thats good service considering it was 15 months ago since I bought it. Having said that it was dry stored in the house and there is no way it could of been in that state had it been rebuilt originally.

If it doesn't fit you obviously need a bigger hammer.

I asked about the state of the current unit on sale - and he advised it is NOT overhauled, but 'should' be ok ! I like my brakes to be a wee bit more certain than 'should' !
