Body Tag

Hiya everyone
The attached photo is of a body id tag off one of my 7s. I think it's off the DHC?
Can you shed some light onto what the meaning of the letters and numbers are please?
My assumptions are paint/body codes and body number? But that is just guessing.
Cheers
Shaun

That is a bodyshell serial no.
They are often missing on wedges that have had panels changed.
My auto has one mounted on the n/s front panel in the engine
bay(ledge above rad.)but the v8 has it on the n/s turret.
these no.s are not often quoted so i don't know of their
significance,certainly other B.L.marques/models had them.
See ya. Paul

It's indeed the body number, nothing to do with paintcode or VIN number. Is it a late (Solihull built) DHC ???
These numbers still are a mistery to me. Got 5 complete cars, all built in 1980 or 1981 but the body numbers are all completely different

Thanks for the responses so far chaps.
Beans. I've been searching through old photo's and sussed which car it's off (excuse me I've got too many - so the wife says...!) It's from my T registered August 1978 FHC, VIN number ACG17418. So where would that one have been built?
The DHC details are: 1981(W reg). Don't know where it was built either - sorry. The VIN for this one is TPADJ7AT214499.

Shaun

TR7V8 has body no. CHP 300434 - 1981 DHC
All these serials seem to have little logic in

My 1980 '8 has got BAP213904,
and most 1980 DHC TR8 I know of [that still have the body number strip left] starts out with BAP...
On VIN numbers:
We must be aware that the model year letter was [for some <b>strange</b>! reason] A for all of the years
when it came to UK market cars. The NA market cars got all three of them: 1980 was A, 1981 was B
and 1982 was C. The C [for 1982 model year] were used on a late batch intended for the Canadian
market. There were 69 TR8 built with that designation - and God only knows how many/few of the
ordinary TR7...
I'm trying to insert an Excel-sheet here but it seems all the formatting information is stripped.
If someone knows how to do this, could you please send me a personal message and I'll try to fix it.
In that case you'll get the '81 extended version VIN system as well...

Yes, that's because they were'nt affected by the NA regulations, so Leyland just didn't care...

Well, I can't explain the seemingly random body numbering system, but as far as I know at the start of production there were two series of body numbers.
Numbers beginning with T were for trimmed bodies, those without the T prefix were untrimmed. The first TR7 shell numbers were T1CG & 1CG. Interestingly the TR8 body numbers are also allocated at this early stage, as T1CK & 1CK.
So, Shaun's body number was a trimmed shell. I don't know how much of the trim was fitted to these T prefix bodies - anyone got any further info on this? And why were some shells delivered trimmed & some not?
As the examples in this thread show, the numbers seem to be quite random, but the parts manual does refer to body numbers as well as commission numbers, so there must have been some system to it all.
Did Triumph build the shells themselves at Speke, then after Speke closed have the shells built by Pressed Steel Fisher & shipped into the Canley & Solihull factories? Maybe the later numbers have correlation to the place of manufacture of the shell?
Bit of a mystery[:)]

The bodies were built at Swindon after Speke and shipped to Canley but not sure about the Solihull built cars.
