TR7 V8 dipstick length

Postby Howard_B » 11 Aug 2022 14:30

I am trying to find out the correct length for the dipstick on my TR7 V8 conversion. It broke and has been repaired without much success.
Does anyone else have one that they could measure for me?

Cheers

Howard

There is no way you can know if the dip stick tube is the correct length anyway, so length of dipstick is not of much individual use.

With this problem, provided you have the standard sump, as I did, just add the correct amount of oil to the engine, then arrange the dip stick to show this level as full. Then you can't be wrong.

This is also true for the 2L engine when the rubber/plastic tube disintegrates-how long do you make your new tube? I used Hasbeens solution.

Hi Howard,

I’ll measure mine when I finish work (Remote Worker).

My 17D prefix V8 originated in one of the last carburettor 3.5L Range Rovers before they went 3.9L efi.

I bought the SD1 sump / oil pipe strainer / dipstick & tube as a complete set from Rovercraft back in the day to convert the assembly to TR8 spec and clear the subframe / rack.

Hi Hasbeen

Totally agree with you, but there seem to be multiple variations on the correct oil quantity in the Rover V8 engine from 4.5 l upwards so I am trying to track down the correct length of dipstick. The tube is metal so should be correct, but the oil quantity ??

Adam

That would be much appreciated. How much oil does it take to to fill it up ?

Thanks

Hi Howard,

Hope this helps.

Rimmers list the SD1 V8 having an oil capacity of 4.8 litres. 4.5 litres in mine takes the level about 7/8th up the distance from the low mark to the high mark on the dipstick.

Many thanks for the pictures and confirmation of oil capacity.
