Handbrake cable components and layout

Postby Slow Hoon » 20 Nov 2021 10:35

Hi,

I've been lurking for a while and I realise this isn't the best time for my first post with the forum about to go offline for a few days but anyway...

Can anyone please direct me to a picture (preferably a photo) of the standard layout of a TR7 handbrake cable where it runs above the prop shaft (underneath the car) in the 300mm/12 inches behind where the cable connects to the handbrake?

My TR7 has been modified by a previous owner - amongst other things the rear axle assembly is out of a Nissan Skyline R31 complete with disc brakes, but the handbrake just doesn't work. Talking with some sympathetic mechanic friends we know what is most likely the problem but for now I'd like to know what the original layout looked like.

Thanks in advance,
Alan.

Going by the use of language, and the reference of a R31 Skyline, you're here in Oz, if by chance you're in Melbourne, you'd be welcome to come around and use my car as a reference.

In most pictures I have, the prop shaft is hiding the connection of the cable to the hand brake lever.
But maybe these pictures will help:

Fantastic, thanks Beans!

With any luck, this link below will show you what I'm faced with:

Part of the problem is that there is no compensator mechanism for the two cables - this thread from 2017 should help on that front:
http://tr7triumph.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=21451&p=241370&hilit=handbrake+cable#p241370

But the main problem is that the cables haven't been shortened since it was all taken out of the donor car, so they go through a couple of tight turns and it looks like the cables are jamming inside their sheaths.

Cobber - thanks for the offer and I'd take you up on it if I didn't live in New Zealand.

Cheers,
Alan.

The standard hand brake set up on the TR7 only uses a single cable between the hand brake lever and the compensator mechanism on the back axle.
This should give a fair impression of the installation ... https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-GRID006207
The compensator (21H5253 and 21H5254) is bolted to the rear of the bak axle.
