It is a lot easier here in Queensland Oz. The Triumph club gives you a deceleration that you are a club member, & your car is historic. You present that to a motor registry office, or in small towns,[6700 people like mine], to the government office, & you receive CLUB registration. Costs A$250 including third party insurance against A$750.

The car is only supposed to be used for club activities, or driving to get service. The triumph club has reciprocal invitations with about 50 other clubs, so you would be very busy attending everything. Besides I have a Triumph Tragic mate in town with a workshop I usually visit when in town.

Some complain it is a lot of trouble here, I don't think they would like yours.

I look at the bureaucratic bullshit hoops they make you poor Pomgolians go through for rego etc. and I shake my head.
No matter how bad the authorities are here thankfully they're nowhere near as officious as your lot, mind you as much as our bureaucrats would like to be like yours, they probably know deep down that Aussies would just tell them to get stuffed and piss off!

The post office told me to return on the 1st April for my free historic road tax. Because I went on SORN for a short while, I don’t have a valid road tax reminder to present to them.

That means I cant tax the car from next month, only within the month of application. I’ve had this before when I’ve not continued the road tax across the winter. No problem, only a couple of weeks to go. The guy looked at the documentation I presented, including the historic tax exemption and MOT exemption and there’s no issue, “just come in on the 1st”.

OK, I am in the same position as my car is currently SORN. Maybe I will leave it until April 1st (probably still make a fool of myself).

This side of the pond we automatically get a lettre from the RDW (Dutch equivalent of the DVLA) stating a car will be tax exempt (@40 years old) or MOT exempt (@50 years old) within a few months. The owner doesn't have to do anything!

One of the cars I purchased last year has been untaxed since 1982 and was first registered in 1969.
I tried to sorn the car on line but it kept saying that in order to sorn it had to have been taxed and it was trying to charge me tax on it.
I eventually contacted DVLA who told me to download the form for tax exemption and take the form to the main Post Office that dealt with car tax etc.
This was November last year, which I did and they were happy to deal with this for me and within 4 weeks I had received my new V5c with a now Historic Vehicle category. It will need re-taxing each year which is of course tax free.
Just take your forms down to the PO and they should be able to sort it for you?
The only thing that my be different for you is the fact that your car has previously been subjected to tax and MoT's and therefore you now need to prove it is of 'age'

In the post this morning arrives Ruby's Heritage Certificate and this time I had the chassis number correct.
Interesting to see that she was built between 20th and 27th of February 1980 and not registered until 13th October 1981.
No dispatch date recorded either or dealer destination apart from UK, so wondering if she was used internally for 18months as some of the cars were :?:
However great to have Ruby's Certificate :D

As production came to an end and afterwards, many cars hung around the wholesale and dealer system unregistered before finding a home. Back in the day I remember many DHC’s on the road with a Y reg and a few with an A reg in NW London

Yes agree with you there, when I worked for Audi/VW we had a customer who traded his 1979 Fiat 132 on a 1982 Fiat 130. He had the misfortune to rear end another car at the traffic lights. We repaired his car but had to order a new front panel and lights etc. The chassis number related to a 1979 Fiat 132. That Fiat must have been one that sat around too. Customer wasn't best pleased that he had traded his old 132 on the same year

I just thought it odd that the date of dispatch was not recorded and all the certificates I have been told of have all had dispatch dates and the destination.
Maybe nobody wanted to buy Ruby when she was Poseidon Green.....

We have it pretty cushy here (British Columbia, Canada). No inspection, no emissions. Assuming your car is 25 years or older and original, period updates are accepted, exemptions are while radio must look original (internals may be updated), certain safety updates accepted like brakes, TR3 owners used this to get higher numbered spoked wheels), you can get "Collector Plates" which lets you get cheap collector insurance around $150 to $180 range per year (or you can get it by preset amount of months (I think 3 months is minimum), license plate is about $54 a year. You can get prearranged value at no cost but it must be by professional appraiser which charges $150 or so for an appraisal, sometimes giving car club discounts. No MOT, no road tax. There is no maximum mileage but with the provision that you can't drive it to work or drive it to school and you must have a regular use car insured (for those purposes). You can drive it all around North America if you want. I got several long distance driving awards in 2019 for going over a certain mileage (over 3,000 miles in that case as I went down to LA to several car shows). If you are bringing in a car from out side of the country, it must have a "safety check" of about 100 items and must have Canada lighting standards etc. if it is less than 15 years old, which means not a collector car. Quite easy on some cars like the Chevy Volt which is done by a dealer software update.

Every Country have different laws in relation to older cars and their policies and newer ones too for that matter.
I think the UK is fair with its policies so lets hope it stays like this for a while at least :)

Hmmm, there must be a slight delay in internet communications from DVLA to the Post Office.
Was told from April 1 I could change to historic vehicle after talking to them on the phone.
Not so, though the Post Office said to come back after Easter and they would try again, if we still have no luck they will phone DVLA while I wait.
That is pretty good service for the PO :)

At the local post office this morning I expected a long wait as I applied for Historic vehicle status, Historic vehicle mot exemption status, and FREE Historic annual road tax simultaneously. I’ve had the engine capacity on the V5 as 3528cc for over 30 years.

It took less time than starting up my wife’s 330e hybrid in the morning! I had to ask if she’d covered everything, “yes, no problem”

The mot exemption status enables me to choose when it’s tested, without deadlines, at my convenience. With a V8 inside it, it would be daft not to.

You had more luck than me Adam, I've just got back from the Post Office, I can not change Ruby to Historic because the car is untaxed!!
I have to contact DVLA. I have already done this and DVLA told me that after the 1st April I will be able to change her Tax Class at the Post Office. Not so, you car needs to be taxed first.
So I am going around in circles here. I will have to post everything off to DVLA and wait for their replay or return post.
My other car was untaxed since 1982, I had the same problem, the post office wouldn't allow me to change the tax class because the car was untaxed.
I had to post off everything in the end to DVLA, looks like I will have to do the same for the TR7

Mine was on SORN for about 2 months before I applied for historic status and historic tax simultaneously. The lady at my post Office was very switched on and I don’t see my area chock full of 40 year old cars either
