Triumph TR7 - Lights left on buzzer

Postby UKPhilTR7 » 13 Apr 2020 20:50

Has anyone added a lights left on buzzer to their 7?

Was thinking today that it should not be that hard.

Triumph TR7 - Lights left on buzzer

Why? It is fairly obvious that the lights are on!

True, but it did not stop the newer cars having them :-)

Just like the idea of it as a bit of an upgrade.

Having managed to leave my side lights / driving lights on a number of times it is a very good idea. As I am currently sorting out the wiring on my 7 I will have a look into what can be done.

Cheers

Just hook a 12v buzzer between the positive feed for headlight switch ( sidelight position) and the positive feed for a ignition 'on' only fuse...that should work and cost a couple of quid...i cant recall if the 12v power socket is ign switched..

Cig socket is not ignition switched on my 7 (unlike modern cars!) Looking at the wiring diagram it is fed from the hazard flasher unit connection.

Tenner well spent, I'd say

that was only a suggestion as i could not recall if it was ign switched, i used the 'cig' socket on my Reliant SS1 ( not a modern car either) - but it was only live when the IGN was in the 'ON' position, when it was in the 'OFF' position, it grounds and if the side lights were on the buzzer would sound..
The same will happen once you identify an ign on circuit

The basic concept of how to wire the buzzer is not totally straight forward on a TR7 as the door switch wiring is not easy to trace.

The easiest way to connect the wires is as detailed below:-

Side light
Use supply feed wire to instrument lighting rheostat (dimmer). This is a red white / wire on my 81 DHC. This energised whenever the lights are on.

Ignition feed
Use the white wire to the dashboard instrument circuits. This is energised whenever the ignition is on, but needs fuse protection

Drivers Courtesy light door switch
This needs to be connected to the purple/white wire which should link between the two door switched inside the wiring loom.

I like the idea of the buzzer for the tenner.

Thanks Howard, it sounds quite easy to access the two wires, but the third one sounds a bit more tricky to locate, the Drivers Courtesy light door switch. Where would that be located?

Don't make it so difficult

All you need is a live feed from your side light switch to the buzzer and from your buzzer to the door switch.

That way you have no power till your lights are on, locate the buzzer up next to light switch and run cable down to the door switch.

That way you are only running one wire effectively.

I selected these particular wires because the side light switch connects straight into the wiring loom & is difficult to connect to, however the instrument light wiring is daisy chained around the switches to is easy to find and connect.

The ignition feed wire is needed to ensure that the buzzer does not go off every time you open either door, even if the ignition is still turned on, and the white wire is not difficult to locate behind the main instrument cluster.

The difficult connection to make is the wire to the door open switch. Both door switches are wired in parallel so opening either the driver or passenger door will trigger the buzzer, but the challenge is to find the purple/white wires in a suitable location for connection. They are easy to locate on either door lights or on the "A" pillar mounted door switch, but not sure how they are routed back into the cockpit area. There is also an interconnecting purple/white between the two door switches, but I expect that it will be hidden within the wiring looms, so happy hunting :)

Cheers

Never had a problem laving lights on (other than the occasional door light that inadvertently gets knocked getting out of the car). It's just part of the shut down procedure.

As for new cars my Volt's computer automatically shuts lights off after ten minutes if left on (ad everything else). Again a shut down procedure. Put car in park. Trigger electric E brake. Step on brake, hit power button. If you don't the car will tell you as you can't otherwise tell if the car is on or off as it doesn't make any noise (except for climate control if it's on)

Both have shut fown procedures that are automatic (by me)..
