I switched to the early one too. The tapping's are already there in the boot lid, just a quick bit of weld to the gutter and touch up and worked well. Have to admit nearly forgetting to lift initially but you can feel it if not too ham fisted.

Searching the old stuff brought up this topic from last summer. There is nobody I can find in the US who recharges the gas struts. But I'd like to try it, since both have recently failed. I have a dive shop nearby that refills my scuba tank to 2200 psi. I think I can talk them into putting the struts inside a tank and running it up to whatever pressure I choose.

Hasbeen, you suggested 1200 psi, but wouldn't that make the struts so strong you couldn't work them?

Do you know how long they apply pressure when your guys recharge them? Is it a just couple minutes, or do they need to stand at pressure for a while?

Thanks

It's a few years since the last time, so I am not too sure, but it isn't long. Probably about 10 minutes or a little longer, but not much.

I have to make an appointment to meet him at his shop, as his is a mobile service mostly, with a high pressure pump in a van. He uses the customers mains power to run the pump. I am just too far out of town to have him come to me. He does them while you wait, & is happy for me to go into the workshop, & watch the procedure.

Dan, there's a guy in Surrey (Vancouver) does them if you find you need an excuse to take a trip up. He's a New Zealander.
You can also mail them in.

Thanks for the info. I called the guy in Surrey and will be sending them up to him. Although I was kind of looking forward to trying it out at the scuba place. As they say - an idiot's famous last words are usually something like: "Here - watch this!"

I bought a pair the other week from somebody at the national meeting in Billing who was selling them for £25.00 a pair and said that they were pumped up to 450lbs, having fitted them they certainly work better than the three that I had fitted previously.

Sadly I can't remember who it was that was selling them but it would be certainly worth having some more of these done because we cant seem to have them refurbished in the UK.

Cheers

It was Guy.

He had a batch commissioned having experimented with an upgrade from the standard 350n to 400n initially, but found that 450n was the optimum.

We bought the last pair from him at Billing and these will be fitted this weekend to Bruce the TR7V8 which has a slightly heavier boot lid as it has an electric boot release mechanism fitted close to the boot lock. I'll report back.

Incidentally, is it just a case of unclipping the old ones and fitting new ones, or is there a knack to replacing them? I haven't had chance to look yet.

Don't recall any special problem replacing them (it was 8 years ago), the fiber board inserts were out and space might have been a little tight.

I took one out the other day and it is easy, but a bit of a tight fit. They have bolt thru eyes at each end and mine were held in place with a steel/nylon locknut. The bolt on the hinge on the left side also holds a small steel angle plate that presses the button for the boot light, so you have to make sure that is set at the right spot or you will leave that light on and run down your battery.

The strut guy in Surrey said to be sure they are installed with the rod pointing toward the front of the car.

I can confirm the uprated 450n struts work a treat. They also look considerably neater than the squash racquet prop that did the job well for a few months.

Anyone describing the space allowed to manipulate the fixing nuts as a "little tight" should consider a career as an estate agent, particularly the one on the fuel filler side!

Yes,
It was me! Just going to get another batch made if anyone's interested.

Drop me a line if you're after some.
