Fuel Tank Filler Tube - RKC3533S

Postby UKPhilTR7 » 19 May 2019 11:36

Hi all,
I have a cracked in my fuel tank and I have taken it out only to find out that the Fuel Tank Filler Tube and the Petrol Tank sender Unit are rusty.

I can get a new Petrol Tank sender Unit easy enough, but cannot see any new Fuel Tank Filler Tubes out there. I can clean up my existing one, but would rather get a new one if possible.

Does anyone know where I can get a new Fuel Tank Filler Tube from (not the runner bit :D )

I always like to use the original parts when ever possible (to keep the car original, the rarest of all cars). There are a number of ways to get rust off of convoluted parts like filler tube. Soaking in a mixture of molasses and water does it (cheap molasses can be bought at animal feed stores but it contains an anti mildew chemical that takes 1 to 2 weeks to dissipate so the mixture can get to work). I also use a rust wash that works very well.

Finding a container that the part just fits into and adding the wash minimizes the amount needed.

As this just gets rid of rust, I finish off with Metalprep from POR-15. More expensive it leaves a zinc coating for rust resistance. You have to spray it on larger parts and keep it moist for 20 to 30 minutes for the zinc to build up a layer.

https://www.amazon.ca/POR-15-40204-Metal-Prep-quart/dp/B00J5940JE/ref=sr_1_13?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIkKv0-uKn4gIVkiCtBh3AsAuvEAAYASAAEgKpGPD_BwE&hvadid=208283784628&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9001612&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t1&hvqmt=e&hvrand=10767006833976131757&hvtargid=kwd-296891600602&hydadcr=8145_9617948&keywords=por+15&qid=1558275061&s=gateway&sr=8-13

The fuel sender is more problematic as you can't douse it in any rust remover as this will get in the unit and strip the resistance coating off the internal rheostat. Spraying on Metalprep and brushing with an old toothbrush will work as the liquid sits on the surface and won't seep into the interior if done right.

Thanks for the reply F1 Spyder. I was initially thinking of rust treatments, but wondered how it would react with the petrol. I was going to soak it in something like POR-15 as I have used this before, but wondered how it would go inside the pipe.

Rust off with by soaking in a mixture of molasses and water https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=molasses&client=opera&hs=qiP&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwih84Gi5KfiAhXUuHEKHbHTAHQQ_AUIDygC&biw=1058&bih=477? I have never heard of this before.

I must admit that I have only used POR-15 meal ready, not the POR-15 Metal Prep. Might be something to look into though if it gives a nice zinc like coating that the petrol will not eat.

I am shocked that the big suppliers have not made a stainless steel version of this though.

Metal Prep is the new name for Metalready.

Get it galvanised. They use very good rust removal systems, & once galvanised it won't rust again in the cars lifetime.

I have looked all over and I can't figure out where I put the filler tube "For safe keeping". I'll keep an eye pout for it but for now it is lost in the barn.

Sorry
