I have bought (still to collect) a replacement dash for my v8, the current one has loads of cracks in it. In winter i intend to replace the dash, check the heater, fix all the non working bulbs etc , but im sure i've read about 'restoring' the dash by painting or detailing or something.

Just what are my options in this area

You will have to use a good quality primer first. Use a good quality sealant on all the screw connections or else the whole dash will squeak.

I've used Vinylkote on the dashboard of two of my cars with good result.
The first was done in 1996, the second in 2009. Both are still looking "factory fresh".

You have to be sure to remove any vinyl treatment products that may have been used previously (many contain silicone) with what ever the paint company recommends. I think acetone is one but double check as you want something that will remove it but not melt the dash.

The dash is ABS, & acetone will dissolve it. ABS dissolved in acetone is used as an adhesive to stick 2 ABS parts together. A wipe with an acetone soaked gag may be OK. I'd test it on the back of a part first.

I have used self adhesive, [single side] 1/2" wide 3/16" thick foam neoprene strips, between all the bits of the dash, & it is still quiet years later. The first time I assembled a dash I used foam rubber strips. These squashed flat in a few months, & the squeaks & rattles returned.

Put a black dash in and then you won't have to mess around with painting. And they look better anyway if not entirely original for your particular car. But then, who is going to know or care?

I have done mine twice with normal grey paint from the motor factors and had no adverse results. The first time twenty years ago and again last year. Just find the best match you can, clean everything the best way you can and take everything apart and take your time. I also painted the screwheads black and this small detail really set of the finish.

Hi, I was advised that Halfords Plastic Bumper Paint Dark Grey 325191 is a very good match for the colour of our dashes. Also my suggestion for cleaning the plastic prior to painting would be to use methylated spirits.
