some help/advice

Hi all
This project came under a different name "The Affair" from another forum.
Got the motor back together and was about to start it when the thermo housing collapsed
More fun. Every time i get to the point of starting her new things break LOL
So here are some questions especially for Australia!!

This canister is full of charcoal and the bottom fell off. I lost some of the contents.
Is it necessary to have and can i bypass it. If so what is the best way to do that!

This is the overflow bottle and is cracked and old
Does anyone know a of a solution to this and if used a generic bottle which one.

Hi Sunnie,

Welcome to the forum,

I would personally bypass the canister as only there to keep the tree huggers happy, but guess you would have to check on local law's and may to change filler cap at the same time as they may be different between charcoal cannister cars and normal ??? We never had them fitted to our cars over here in the old country.

That expansion bottle don't look correct anyway, how old is your car ? I have heard of people using VAG bottles on their car's.

I use to post on that other forum that is no longer available
So i chased you guys here

Plate says 5/78 ACG36093 KF I believe it is Tahiti Blue.
and as you know i am in Aus.

I was chasing any idea on a replacement for the bottle and i am not a real purist just wanna drive the bloody thing
More along the idea of going to a wrecker/breaker and looking for something close. And if a person had the similar problem and solved well Bob's ya uncle.

FYI
ACG 36093 KF is marked on the build cards as '2v 1976 Fed RH Australian' but built in a 1978 shell. Left the production line 9th Mar 1978. The engine is a CL (1975-78) and was fitted with low-compression pistons.

Legally speaking, here in Oz, you are obliged to have the carbon canister fitted, having said that.....I doubt anyone here would notice, especially if the car is registered in one of the civilised states that don't have ridiculous, unnecessary annual inspections! :lol:

The coolant tank is identical to my Lotus V8 Esprit expansion tank. It is available from Lotus part number A082K6040F for £35.28. However if it is on a Lotus is highly likely to be on other mass production cars. I can't find any reference to other manufacturers but a bit of digging may yield some results but I doubt they will be much cheaper.

Just had a look on some Ebay sites and the new price is cheaper than the 2nd hand prices (not so unusual with Lotus these days) so new could be a good option.

The charcoal cannister is to absorb fuel vapour etc. when the car sits and it is then sucked into the intake when the motor is on. It is part of a "sealed" system to prevent crap entering the atmosphere. It doesn't have any deleterious effects on performance. If you take it off you have to change it over to a "vented" system with different gas cap etc. If you get it wrong you can get problems like a vacuum being created in the gas tank overpowering the ability of the fuel pump to supply fuel on one end of the spectrum to the smell of gas fumes in the cabin on the other end of the spectrum. I would leave it in place even if it doesn't have all the charcoal in it. New ones are available but if you don't need to pass a rigorous test not really necessary.

As far as overflow bottle any of around the same capacity should work. Nothing magical about them. On the newer cars they went to a brass tank that was mounted high up to aid in the to and fro of the coolant as it expanded and contracted with temperature. From 1980 on the expansion tank had a sensor that would turn on a coolant light in the dash to tell you when it got low.

The TR7 in Oz does not have an expansion tank. The thing you show looks like the header tank. However yours looks to be plastic, rather than the correct brass/copper tank. As the header tank it has to handle full coolant pressure, 14 psi, at near 100c. I would never fit an old bit of plastic to do that, although a new one should be fine. I would expect Greg Tunstall Mechanical in Ormiston Qld to have second hand copper ones.

If you retain the charcoal canister make sure it is correct & working as specification. It should be connected to the fuel tank breather, carb overflow/breathers & the crank case breather, & be excavated [Sorry evacuated] by a connection to the engine side of the carbs in the inlet manifold.

A piece of green US garbage, we only got them because Leyland were too miserable to build cars to our regulations, & sent us those gutless US models. Fit UK high compression pistons if ever you rebuild the thing, the performance difference is quite large.

Removal is the best idea, but this must obliterate any sign of its previous existence to be safe from the more officious cops or transport inspectors. One Qld Stag owner was caught out by a roadside inspection that found his was not working properly. He had to get it working properly & take the car for a full inspection. A right pain when few really understand how the thing is supposed to work.

No one inspecting my Triumphs would ever suspect anything was missing, unless a lot more knowledgeable than most owners. I use the old breather system that was connected to the canister, but with a nice little filter on it. I think the old canister may have jumped into the rubbish skip we had here, when I cleaned out the shed. Naughty canister.

The guys racing Rover SD1 & Morgan V8's here (SA) advised me to fit a non branded VW reservoir to my 8 in place of its original unit. This works like a charm if someone would explain to me in words of one syllable as how to place a photograph on the forum I could send you a photo.

Looks like the overflow bottle as used on the Triumph Dolomite 1850 and Sprint.
These cars have in essence the same coolant system as the early TR7's.
So unless they have changed anything else, the original TR7 overflow bottle (TKC1887) can be used.
Or convert to the later closed system with a header tank. But that needs more new bits.
