I've recently fitted a big brake kit (Rimmers I think) and whilst I love the new stopping power, I'd like a little bit less pedal travel.

Whilst the usual suspects all have upgrade kits, and I expect I'll end up with one of these if the other options require machining etc...

I'm left wondering are they any more modern options available in the UK?

You sure everthing bled ok and rear brakes adjusted up ? Also are you using rubber or stainless hoses, the rubber can ' balloon ' giving a cr4p pedal. IF still using rubber try clamping one pipe at a time to see if you can isolate any air in the system.

If all ok then the only set ups I know of over here are BL Sherpa master cylinder and servo, SD1 set up but req's a spacer neither exactly modern !

I had exactly the same problem when I fitted the larger brake callipers. It requires more swept volume at the master cylinder to push the Pistons on to the discs. I wasn't comfortable with the pedal travel even with stainless braided brake hoses.

I fitted the Rimmers uprated master cylinder / servo combo and it cured it immediately. There's about as much travel as the pedal on a Citroen CX - that's not much at all. Lots more feel and confidence as well. It was literally fit and forget, no fettling required. It wasn't cheap until they had one of their sales. I think I got 20 to 25% off.

I think some of the Australian guys on the forum have fitted Volvo brake items to uprate them. I don't know if thats extended to the servo/cylinder combo.

I suspect I'll end up with a kit from one of the usual suspects, they seem to be a simple change and all the problems thought through. How much higher does the pedal actually sit with these?

I've fitted stainless hoses at the front, the hoses looked like the originals and were well passed their best. I need to change the rear, though that had been changed just before I bought the car. I'm going to re-bleed the brakes again just in case, thought as busheytrader/Adam said I think it's the amount of fluid needed to move all 8 pistons is causing the travel. The other thing I've seen is fitting 4speed rear brake cylinders also help with the travel, so something else to add to the list of jobs.

I seem to remember citreon's of that age brakes used to be almost binary, always worked well though just took a little getting used to.

I didn't notice a difference in brake pedal height. It's still the best car for me to heel and toe in. The brakes are progressive not binary. There is some pedal travel with my set up but not a lot. My Capri callipers may have less swept volume than your 4 pots. The brake pedal needs a heavier right foot than my Mk3 MX5. The greenstuff pads may account for this.

When I had drums on the back of my DHC I ran 4 speed cylinder and also fitted a T piece on top of the axle in the brake line so each cylinder had its own supply and therefore a bleed nipple too.
