Has Roy turn to the "dark side"

Postby phillines » 09 Jul 2014 15:13

I've just returned from my daily trip to see Roy Hankin as he sometimes buys a sandwich from my van and parked outside his work was and blue MGF. When I asked him who was the owner he said it was him as he'd just collected it yesterday!
As a harden TR7 owner I was surprised, he even sold me the one I drive.
Has he gone over to the dark side, was the recent Stoneleigh show together with MG enough to turn Roy's head?
I wanted to know more but he was soon busy with a customer, but I will ask tomorrow and keep you posted. I might even get a picture for those who like me don't believe it.

Fear not Phil, he drove his TR7 down to view the MG before he bought it [:D] And he is keeping the TR7, just wanted a car he could use day to day but something a bit more fun than his Escort estate!

With Rover prices generally on the floor, some of their cars are amazingly good value at the moment. It's an MG TF 160 VVC by the way. I am sure he will tell you all about it tomorrow ...

Being serious he did ask me whether they were any good as daily drivers. I've had a few over the years and really enjoyed them. I fancy a Trophy MGF as a keeper.

Thanks for letting the cat out of the bag Phil, that's a free sandwich you owe me as recompense.

Well, you may as well all have a look at my moment of weakness.

It's John Woods fault really, blame him, he let me drive his Porsche Carrera the other day,it gave me the need for speed. So I asked him if I could borrow it for a while, but he politely declined, and suggested I by an MG.[:D]

As you can see I found Roy today giving his new MGF a clean. He tell me that he hasn't sold his TR's but and this is a big but, if he likes the MGF he may start collecting them! Should we be worried about this recent turn of events?

Hi,

Wow Phil that picture is HUGE !

A good friend of mine and MASSIVE MG fan, managed years ago to get hold of chassis number 000002 MGF ( first was crash tested ), he worked for the company that dealt with the disposal of all MG /Rover experimental cars as well as there every day crash damaged car's. He managed to talk his way into saving shell no.2. It was a pure ' body in white car ' ie. was a fully assembled car but with no underseal, seam sealer ect and loads of very strange trim ect that never made production. As a MGF tech I gave him a hand stripping it for sealing, as was totally un-driveable in that condition, next time I get a chance to speak to him must ask what became of her, I was told he could only legally sell it back to MG, but not sure if that was the case.

The first hundred or so shells were recalled and scrapped as the dimensions were so far out we could not stop them pouring water in so anything early is a very very rare car, dam sounding like a MG anorak [:p], got launch packs, workshops manuals etc. all stuff I saved when left MG dealership I worked at.

On that note, a T shirt of mine -

The TF was a far better car BMW had breathed upon the MGF and this was the result, and to be honest a bargain of a sports cars, so nearly took a job a few years ago at Brown And Gammon working on them again.

Cheers John

Roy, I suggest you check out and join the T-Bar forum http://www.the-t-bar.com/ It's the by far best MGF/TF forum. I guarantee you'll get a warm welcome and excellent technical support, I'm one of the moderators there, so I'll see that you're looked after.
Over there, I use the same username (Cobber) as here.

Thank you Cobber. I will have a little gander at the MGTF forum purely out of interest you understand. Just for the record, I'm not on the turn, my devotion will always be with the TR7 and Triumph. I'm just too much of a TR7 enthusiast to be interested in any other classic, unless a mint TC Marina came along that is, and even then it would play second fiddle to the TR7. So I'm here to stay, so stop stirring it up Phil[:D]
PS
Please can someone take that horrid big picture off.
