Can we not make a column Technically divided into the areas of the motor gear .. etc. .. we can and above all new users the reports of targeted search

.. and the pop up lights, water pump and cylinder head bolts with tips and improvements may drawings
.. of course, is not exclusively something that someone can not write it interchanges and how lousy it was ...!

but it is sade over the years all this good informations get lost or are hard to find..
it's just an idea from me what do you think?

I miss the technical data area ..

Agree on both previous replies.

But bear in mind that this forum is vey much a private undertaking.
Also a bit more discipline by the users, search first and do some reading on the subject before asking questions over and over again ...

<font color="teal"><b>This has been said lots of times

but we need the forum to be upgraded and as you know

Ron(silverseven) (the only active mod) said he was going to talk to Jay (owner of site)

about this and other details

personally I would love the forum to be revamp but I also feel sorry for Ron (silverseven)

As he is the only one that we moan to about this subject (sorry Ron..[:I] )

can we have an update if anything has happened about upgrading the site

also If there are any financial expense I am sure by setting up a paypal account to contribute to

A technical area (subdivided into sections) would indeed come in handy but would have to br filtered to include the best of the relevant posts. That is a lot of work, as is updating to a different system. Not something a working man would likely have time for. I'm just glad we have what we have.

Ron, how close to retirement are you???[:o)]

Spider is right, to try to sort out the best of the relevant posts would be a real job...and who is to say what is relevant? Just looking back at different threads, there are many reason's why something doesn't work.

We all know that to be a successful TR7 owner you must be a decent mechanic or be willing to learn to be one or have plenty of money to pay someone to do the work for you !![:p]

I'm glad I found this forum as well. A good place to learn a little and to give a little back.

Thanks Ron !

I personnally think that the way the forum is. Is what makes it so good people come and go but the infomation gets passed on from teacher to pupil and as an educated pupil we have tried the suggestions and learned by experience.

It works and it works damn good plus we have a laugh, paitence is a virtue they say and makes for a good teacher

On some other forums that are very much the same set up as this one, such as one devoted to Z3 BMWs.
http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/fo ... .php?f=137

There are several topics 'parked' at the top of the forum list. The moderator(s) move deserving posts into these parked threads where repetitive type questions are answered.

Perhaps something similar could be done here by first setting up several similar parked items and gradually populating them.

Of course....easy for me to say....

I think it is one of those difficult questions which could turn out to be a double edged sword. It would be good and useful to have an archive for each subject at times, but it might lose the friendly exchanges if everybody just used the search because it was easy (and most subjects have alteady been covered at some time). Being an insular unsocial mechanical engineer (although we are not as bad as mathematicians) I do not get deeply involved in chit chat but do enjoy reading the input to threads, and the technical items raised by newcomers do serve as a reminder for those older members whose memory might no be what it was. The search does work if you need it (OK, it could be better but within the scope of the site it is not bad) and to make the forum too regimented would detract from its appeal.

<font face="Century Gothic"><font color="purple">To significantly upgrade the forum takes a lot of work.... the base forum (Snitz) hasn't moved on massively, and though there are other options migrating existing topics & users are not straightforward.

The forum is hosted on ASP and I've zero intent on moving away from a MS base to PHP (namely because the main site is ASP and I know a fair bit of the .net/vbscript.

If anyone knows of a good ASP forum, with migration tools I'll happily look into it. I did start work on migration previously but it's not a priority in my free time.</font id="purple"></font id="Century Gothic">

Please, leave it well enough alone. To change anything in life is time consuming, expensive, and disruptive to the established mind set of everyone.

This wonderful forum is not broke and does not need fixing. When the odd disruption from the lunatic fringe does appear, there are enough monitors to rid the system of the trash.

We're okay just like it is.

Hi Jay,

I have some free time at present and would be happy to volunteer to assist a migration from the current Snitz/MS Access implementation to something more current.

I have SQL (MySQL, PostgreSQL, MS SQL Server, DB2), .NET (C# & VB) and Java skills.

What DBMS options can be used with your current host?

IMHO, first step is to select at target platform (http://www.yetanotherforum.net/ ?); do a mapping of the PDM and produce a test plan.

Let me know if I can help.

I know it might be efficient, with a really good reference system, but would it be as much fun, & would we not loose a learning experience for many of us.

I know I am often pleasantly surprised, when someone has tried all our "proven" fixes, only to find a new answer to a problem, when the old ones fail.

If we were not discussing the problem the new answer may not be reported, & we old timers may not learn as much as we do, each time a problem reoccurs.

I see nothing wrong in finding a better way to search the archives, but I'd hate to loose the friendly helping comradeship we have here.
