Pertronix ignition install question

Postby Gubi » 18 Aug 2010 05:14

So I'm installing a Pertronix Ignitor into my TR7. I noticed that the Pertronix pickup is not in the same rotational location as the stock electronic ignition pickup. Does anyone know if this is by design, or should I rotate the distributor body so that the new pickup is in approximately the same place?

If I leave it where it is it looks like it's about 30 distributor degrees retarded from stock. I want to at least make sure it's close enough that it'll start. Thanks for any suggestions.

For the record this job would have been a lot easier if any of the wiring diagrams in the service manual were for the DM4 distributors. Sigh.

I fitted one of these a few months back (ok, maybe 4 or 5). It does fit in a different place to the points heel but mine started OK, if a bit rough, after installation. (There is a thread somewhere in the last few months where I posted some pictures). I then adjusted the timing (strobe & turn the dizzy) to the standard 10 deg BTDC and it ran fine.

Thanks. I heard back from Pertronix tech support today as well: they said the different location is by design. So I'll just see what happens when I start it and adjust the timing from there.

Now to just find the time to finish the job...

Missed your location Gubi, the standard timing setting might be different for your car dependent on model.

Mostly the same. Everywhere in the US except California it's 10 BTDC for a '79. CA cars had an additional 12-degree vacuum retard at idle so it's 2 ATDC.

That's assuming you have the vacuum retard hooked up, of course...
