Rimmers revised website

Postby Marsu » 11 Aug 2010 07:47

Is anyone else irritated by Rimmers revised website?

I tended to mostly order from Rimmers because it was easier to identify and order the parts I needed compared to the S&S and Robsport sites. (Although I have used both of the latter suppliers and like dealing with them too; and like the fact that there was choice and competition.)

But, IMHO, the new Rimmers site is vastly inferior to the previous in terms of providing a resource catalog of parts and ready access to an e-commerce facility.

Perhaps we should encourage them to perform some user acceptance testing (UAT)?

I didn't care for it at first but have gotten used to it.

It's still the only source on the net (that I know of) that provides the exploded diagrams from the official parts books.

I'm sure many of us look up the part numbers on their site and then order elsewhere.

But that would be rude![:D]

It would also be rude to download all the images and print them out (at work, no less) for a handy workshop guide. So I wouldn't do that either. [;)]

But it seems to me that the Rimmer's site is not as complete as it used to be and some part references on diagrams now use RB part numbers as opposed to the OEM.

Perhaps we (the forum, collectively) could address the need for publication of a complete searchable parts catalog for all variants.

I have, and could scan to PDF, the May '82 published Parts Catalog (RTC9828CC) which is (at a guess) a couple of 100 pages. It would take me some time to scan and would then need some effort to index to make searchable.

There are also other editions that cover other TR7 models, TR8 and Sprints. I hope some members here may have these originals and be able to scan them.

I would be happy to coordinate a group effort to get these docs online in a searchable form. Please let me know if you are interested in supporting such an effort.

That sounds like a great idea!

I would be happy to help there, I have had some success in the past with OCR on scanned documents - it's still a helluva lot of work though!

Another idea would be to add alternative/upgraded parts in the listings (Princess calipers, saturn alternator etc).

What's wrong with ordering the FREE parts catalogue from Rimmers, must be easier than downloading all the images and printing them out.

I like the idea of an alternative/upgraded parts listing, and make it a sticky for this site.

Revington's site now uses parts diagrams with the listings, but the diagrams are quite small, although you can zoom in. Still, quite useful.
