Alternator Problems....

I just bought a reman alternator from victoria british and I ran into a problem...

The connectors to the alternators are different.[V]

As you can see with the picture below, the prongs to the new one has a small, big, big pattern of prongs.

The old one has small, big, small pattern to it.

The new one also has two additional connectors on it. The bolt with 2 nuts and another prong.

I did make sure to order the right alternator form the catalog. (1979 TR7 w/ A/C, Part# 8-125-Z)

Does anybody know how I can fix this or should I just return it and rebuild the one I have???????????

I know for a fact you can buy a replacement alternator which bolts stright in, it might be an idea to phone VB up first and ask why you are not able to do so. Hear them out, if they have a valid reason then all's good, if not, return the alternator and get them (or another supplier) to find an alternative. It would be a shame to have to butcher your cars loom for the sake of a wrong part.

Perhaps a previous owner had modified the connector on your car. If that's the case it may be better to put it back to standard.

I believe you may be right John, because from memory I thought the standard Lucas unit had 2 large and 1 small connector as per the new unit, although I am not near my car to check.

Here's a picture of my Spider. The wires are separate (no block). However I think my '79 Yellow TCT has a block similar to CMT's but not near car so can't check. The Alternator seems very different from those I've seen and you'll notice it actually has 4 connector tabs.

The Lucas ACR alternators have 2 X large and 1 X small connection. Often only 1 of the large connectors is used - they are both the same bus connection anyway. The 'replacement' alternator you have is very different - I would send it back. If the ACR is not working - it's very often just the brushes - easily and cheaply renewed.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I just decided to send it back and rebuild the one I have. I think I just ordered the wrong one...[xx(][xx(][xx(]

I talked to the VB guys and they didn't have a clue what the problem was...

I'm guessing I should of ordered the 17 ACR instead of the 20 or 25 ACR.
I just got confused and just saw heater models only and A/C models only.
