Thanks Peter

The tow bar I have does not have the T piece at the back on the spare wheel well

Do you need this ?

the front bit that fits to the chassis legs looks the same as yours but there is about a 2" gap

do you remove the bumper when fitting?

I will have a proper look at it and try again

I think the T piece is for extra strength, but as for the 2" gap I am not sure. I haven't really taken a proper look to see if the rear bumper needs to come off before fitting.
I can take a better look tomorrow for you and let you know.
Cheers
Peter

My car has the rear cross bar fitted Stevie (just as in the pics above) - but is missing the forward running bar that would carry the tow ball - although the holes where it fitted to the wheel well are there - I plugged them with grommets. I suppose if the trailer is very light - it will be ok without that forward bar - although all the twisting load will be on the rear bar. Mind you - I have my doubts just how much the spare wheel well ever contributed to the strength - even when the car was brand new! I think if I was making one up now - I would be bridging across to the chassis members with an angle iron for some decent strength in that forward mounting. Thing is - I'm not sure you are allowed to make your own tow bar these days - I certainly made quite a few in the past - and none ever let me down! If a tow bar is fitted at MOT - it is MOTable....... beware!

Here is another couple of pics,
The length of the T piece at the end of the long part is 16" and the length from the main bar to the T piece is 23"

Hope this is of some more help, also there is a gap between the mounting bracket and the chassis rail, on mine it is about 17mm and there is a spacer in between.

The car is unable to handle my driving capabilities

I have a tow bar, not fitted i think i have been told i'm cutting the grass today so whilst in the shed I'll dig it out and take a photo for you i think mine too has the "T" piece angle bar don't forget you will if you haven't got them allready you will need some metal strengthening plates for where the bolts go through the wheel well etc.

Oh and Stevie make sure you tell your insurance company it will class as a modification

It rides again..... and again wehey!!!!!!!

If there is a gap - fill it with flat bar shims - not washers!
