Is it possible to recalibrate my speedometer??

Postby 92rrrandall » 04 Aug 2010 15:11

Got the instrument panel out because I am swapping the useless clock for an oil pressure gauge and installing the LED illumination.

My speedometer is reading 5 to 10mph when the car is not moving, and about 10mph too fast when cruising. Speedometer was like that when I bought it.

I am completely aware that there are many gear tooth choices for the transmission end of the speedometer.

My question is: Is it possible to remove the speedo needle and then reinstall needle at 0mph or make any calibration of the speedo myself??

Randall -

It may be possible simply to rotate the needle on the shaft down to the stop at zero, without actually removing it. I did that on my temp gauge.

I have a couple of old speedometers at home, and will be happy to experiment to see if it can be done later this afternoon.

OK - just checked. The needles on the speedometers rotate all the way around, and are stopped by pins on zero and top end. If yours is starting out at 10 mph, I would think the movement is sticky; should be free to drop all the way back to zero. Maybe just need to take it out and give it a good cleaning with some aerosol cleaner like tuner cleaner, then a shot of WD-40.

I did try to pull the needle off, but it wasn't budging. Didn't want to break it, as the gauge is still good, so I didn't pull too hard.
