ZS Carb damper oil-topping...

Been thinking bout this topic lately, so I thought Id start....

..All us Wedgies with the Z-Strom's, how often do You top up your ZS carb's with damper oil? (I use the same Castrol 20w50 that I use in the engine). This is my first TR7 Ive driven in some years (with stock 2.0L & Z.S.), my last couple wedges were TR8's with Holly/Edelbrock 4bbl upgrade. So that means I can not remember how often I needed to top the damper oil up on my past 7's.

This 7 I am driving now, seems to need damper oil-topping every hundred miles or so to run and idle nicely. (And no, my rubber diaphram's are fine, no tears or weak spots)

So in short....How often do You top up your damper oil? Just something I have been curious about [:D]

honestly maybe once or twice a year...mind you I don't drive it half as much as I'd want too....
(I like you also use the left over motor oil)

I have only had one 7 with ZS carbs. I only topped up the oil on
that once, in about 4000Km.

With the SUs I only top up the oil when I notice a flutter in the
things throttle response. This would only be once or twice a year
with 6000 to 12,000Km a year average usage.

A much chewed on piece of cud!

As you may well know, the needle holder has an O-Ring at it's base, who's main purpose in life is to retain the oil in the stalk.
This O-ring does deteriorate. When it does, the oil in the stalk seeps into the carburetor mouth to provide lubrication to the valve stems and the business end of the valve guides. If one is using Marvel Mystery oil, the seepage can promote an upper cylinder cleaning effect, so says the label on the can.

All this means is the dear owner of the TR7 gets to exercise their God given right to weekly reaquaintance with the goings-on in the engine compartment. In other words, 'Constant tinkering which is the hallmark of true sports car ownership' and is boldly highlighted on the front page of your owners manual.

If it's not there, please feel free to write it there with a felt tipped marker.

1>> I searched & searched & searched & searched to No avail.....the Search function had not been my friend this week, kept 'timing out' no matter How I worded the search [:(!][:(!]

2>> I did years ago ask my technical-guru, Woody Cooper about this very same product (MarvMys Oil.I use it in fuel to do the same) he claims that MM-oil is too light of an oil to maintain proper dampning of said carbs. So I stick with Castrol 20w50, same as I run in my engines [:)].

3>> Yeah, I wasnt really looking for "When or How often should I check/top up my damper oil". But more as "How often do You check and top up your carbs' damper oil" Just something I had been thinking about while working on my wedge one afternoon. Thanks all, I do appreciate the input!
