Raising a Soft Top

Postby kennymanx » 30 Jul 2010 06:44

I've just returned to the Triumph gang after many years away and bought a TR7 convertible. Any tips on putting the hood back up? It seems very difficult compared to my wife's MX5 and even my Stags from some years ago. Is there a trick to it ?

It's an absolute cinch compared to say the MGB!! And mine is even easier since when fitting the new hood - I used velcro at the sides instead of daft 'poppers'. No chance of this hood tearing there - which was all that was wrong with the old hood..........

Many tops like my 30 year old one (even though it looks like new) is stiff and has shrunk some. Not having much stretch to it, it is difficult to put up when cold. The trick is to put it up while it's still warm out or warm it up with a hair dryer (possibly where "hair dryers car" comes from [:)]) Some times that requires a longer extension cord.[:(] It also helps to pull the rear (above rear window) frame forward when trying to latch the catches.

Park it in the garage, keep the roof down, then throw a dust cover over it ready for the next sunny day.

Seriously though don't raise the hood after you've had your fun and the sun's gone down. I'd swear that cooler temperatures shrink the roof enough to make it a tug of war when connecting the header rail. It's a doddle when warm. Mohair should be easier than vinyl.

Since my TR8 is "popping poppers" so to speak (3 gone in the past month) this might be an excellent time to try velcro, especially since I can't find a source for the original plastic parts and don't like the look of the metal ones (which have a "skirt" that the plastic ones lack) even though you can't see them with top up or down - it just bugs me to know they're there! Great idea - thanks for the tip!

I recently had to put the 8s hood up for the first time in a very
long time, on a cold, about 5C morning.

I had to get help, as there was no way I could stretch the thing far
enough, & push the pins in by myself.

I thought these mohair things were supposed to not shrink, & be good
keeping the water out. It didn't do that too well either.

I've ordered the right part number from 2 different suppliers now, and although each one shows the right plastic ones in their catalog, they both sent the wrong metal ones, in baggies labeled with the right part number. So I'm assuming the original parts ran out and are being replaced with something that works but looks totally different. I'll probably try ordering from every supplier I can think of, though, and hope that one of them has a few of the old ones left in the bins...

The hoop supports bolt to the body on slotted holes - so if the hood is too tight - just slacken these bolts and allow the hoops to settle down slightly lower.
