Indicator Fault.

Hi,
My left turn signals work fine but when indicating right the rear lamp stays on, as does the green dash lamp. The front lamp does not come on though, i've checked / replaced the front bulb anyway. Is this a common fault? i'm planning on checking the wiring immediately behind the front lamp then removing the indicator stalk as i've got a feeling it could be a dirty contact in there but thought i'd ask you knowledgable guys an gals first before barking up the wrong tree!

Usually if it stays on it is the flasher module that is at fault. Clean the connections & give it a tap with a spanner if you feel like it. If that doesn't work then replace it. You should find it lurking under the dash forward of the bonnet release on RHD cars.

I would suggest an electronic flasher unit, much better than the standard ones. However, if the rear stays on and the front doesn't light, the tell tale inside will stay on as it thinks there is a bulb failure, the front one. Also the reason the rear stays on and does not flash. Check that the contacts for the front bulb are clean and making contact with it, and that there is power and a good earth there.

As you have the fault on just the one side, I would check the front bulb & socket first. Probably dirt or corrosion - same thing happened on my TR7V8 DHC. I ended up fitting a new sidelight/indicator unit as the old one was so corroded.
The electronic flasher relay is a good idea though, once you have them working.

When i changed the front lamp there was no corrosion inside, surprisingly! anyway, whilst completing the last of my 500 running in miles i forgot they were not working and indicated right, and they worked?!?! it's a bit too late to order an electronic unit, i'll have to make do with the standard flasher relay which will turn up tomorrow i hope. In the meantime i'll go around the contacts cheacking and cleaning as i go. Not sure why i'm bothering actually, it's not as if anyone uses indicators anymore[:p]

Good stuff. Although in my opinion it is worth replacing the flasher unit with an electronic one anyway. I always found the standard relay rubbish, it would vary the flashing rate with engine revs and was generally unreliable.
For the record, I do not think your problem is the flasher unit as it should affect both sides if it was.

I had trouble with the flashing rate on my TR7 V8, so I used the pos feed to the flasher relay to operate a relay with a direct feed from thebattery (via a fuse obviously) and this gave a god 12 volts to the relay where before it only had a reduced voltage. No idea why the voltage on the feed was so low but I needed a quick fix for the MOT and this did the trick. Also ended up fitting a new relay and that only lasted a year !
Other alternative is to put either a BMW sign on the back of the car or a Taxi light on top and then you don't have to indicate !
If it isn't broken, I can still fix it

When one of the bulbs in the circuit goes bad or you loose ground at the socket, the indicators will not work (staying on) or will flash really fast.
Changing the bulb usually will fix the problem but be sure to check the socket ground to the rear light casting and to the body.
