Spare Wheel

Postby reychris » 16 May 2010 10:26

A question for all TR7's that run 15" wheels and bigger brake discs. Has anyone tried an MGF spacesaver tyre as their spare wheel?
I have 15" alloys but only a 13" steel spare so if i get a puncture on one of the fronts I'll have to put my faith in a can of tyreweld. I don't particularly want to spend money on a full size alloy and tyre that (hopefully!) never gets used. The MGF tyre is 175/656 T14 and are available for £30 from Ebay.
My only other concern apart from it fitting is the load rating. The MGF is 82 where my full size Pirelli is 86, close enough do you think?

Fit the spare tyre on one of the rear wheels then exchange the good rear wheel for the punctured front.

MGF space saver is a good idea though, haddnt thought of that.

I solved my problem by buying another alloy MGF wheel from Ebay - it had a few scratches so was v cheap, but more than OK as a spare

Might have a punt on the spacesaver after a bit more investigation. It could also give a bit more boot space for carrying extra tools!

You won't gain much space in the boot with that steel wheel, it's not a space saver.

There is something on the market called puncturesafe - a coating that goes in the tyres prior to getting a puncture and actually seals any puncture you get whilst driving along.

I have it in my works vans and it does work. I have spoken to the guy that does it and explained about how awkward the wheels are to balance, but he is certain it will not be a problem, so I will go this way although I haven`t done it yet.

P.S. If anyone within about a 30 mile radius of Newton Abbot, South Devon is interested in this, let me know and I will pass your details on to him - he`s a mobile tyre fitter.

P.P.S. I have no monetary interest in this - just helping people out.

Wow, it really is. But make sure when you have a different spare that you have the nuts to match. Hey, you know what I mean. [:I] You don't want to find out the wheel nuts won't properly secure the wheel while you're on the side of the road ... on a dark & rainy night ... in the wrong neighbourhood ... and you can hear a lone wolf howling in the distance.

That`s the stuff. As an aside, the tyre pressure monitors are also a good idea seeing how susceptible handling can be to a few psi variation.

Yes, a 15" wheel will fit (195/50x15 tyre)
As should a 16" and 17" with the correct size tyre.
