OK I was wondering (just because I'm currious) what people thought about BMH certificat and how much info could be had from it. I am looking for any info about ACW42937UMF
can't remember the build date listed on the door (not near car)
Paint:NAB
Trim:RAA

from this info seems as though it is late '78 ( someone told me it was actualy a '79 but from this it would seem not to be. Just wondering if there any other methods of getting good info from the vin

Production ended in May 1978
Speke built cars are identified by a three-letter prefix in front of the chassis number, as follows:
1. Assembly Plant: A = Speke built
2. Model range: C = TR7/8
3. Specifications L = 1975-76 model year North American Coupe.
G = 1976-78 Coupe for Home Market, Europe and Australia.
W= 1977-78 model year North American Coupe.
H = 1977 TR7 Sprint Coupe with four valve/cylinder engine.
N = 1977-78 model year TR7-V8 Coupe (for North America?).
T = 1978 TR7 Convertible - for North America.
4. Chassis Number Varies in the number of digits.
5. Option suffixes U = North American specification cars
L = Rest of the world left-hand drive cars.
F = Five speed gearbox fitted.
A = Automatic transmission fitted.
C = Exhaust emission control fitted.
M = Canadian specification.


Any other ideas would be great as to finding information about a car's history.
I know the car was sold new from Decarie Motors out of Montreal. I went to see them in hopes of being able to get a copy of the original bill of sales ( I have service log book, plastic dealer service card, about 20 yrs worth of bills, original owners manual etc) but since they had changed locations a few years ago they had disposed of many of the paper documents from that time. I do have the original ownwers name and an old address but sadly he has passed on from what info I have been able to gather.

A late 78 would make it a 1979. (around Sept or later.) I'd say you are out of luck with original bill of sale if it's not in the deceased's papers. I happen to have mine, it's kind of nice to have it (a copy) posted on the side of the window...gets lots of attention at car shows.[8D]

I also have every single bit of paperwork concerning my car, your right spyder....having the original sale contract does make people stop and read very often!

I should apply for my heritage certificate.....

yes the bill of sale would be a nice conversation piece not much more than that though. Not sure I follow you on it would be a '79 though. If the build date is '78 and the sale was made and car titled in '78 and the vin confirms it to be of the batch built at Speke "A"

How could it be considered a '79 ?

I just went and checked the date stamped on the door plaque and it's APL 1978. I thought in my head it was later than that. As far as i know production at Speke stopped sometime in May 1978. It's funny how I have met more than a handfull of people telling me it's a '79.

Am i missing something?

Anyone have anything to say about if they thought the heritage certificate was worth the money? Just a momento realy I guess.

The whole model year versus build date gives many a headache. The 1978 prototype TR8 coupes (ACN01XXX)were as a majority 1978 model year cars even though they were built typically 8/77 for speke. My TR8 coupe was built in 8/79 and it is a 1980 model year. The convertibles are even harder when one might be titled and have the 1980 model year information and be a black dashboard, single buldge bonnet with tan interiors rolled into 1980. It is about September/october when the convertible TR7s were 1980 model year cars.

I tried to get a heritage certificate for my TR8 coupe and they did not have any records. Anyone else have a certificate.

You're right it would be a 78. I had forgotten about the strike that started in May. By the time production started in the fall of 1978(which would be 1979 model year which starts in September) production had moved to Canley with the TCW cars. The TCT convertibles (January 1979), of which my Yellow TCT is one, is actually registered as a 1980 because that's the date it was sold and registered. Incidently for me it raises the question of whether I can repaint it using only 1979 colours or can I use 1980 colours as well. For collector plates (which I already have, no extra insurance, licencing fees) it must be a colour (or close to it) that was available in that year.
