Hi all,

I am replacing my 1980 TR7 transmission front and rear oil seals, as well as the tranny oil pump. According to the serial number, my tranny is supposed to take a UKC1060 front seal and a UKC3949 rear seal. I purchased these seals a while back. Today when I went to install them, the rear seal is fine, but the new front seal (which wasn't in a box or plastic with the part number on it) wasn't even close to matching the old seal.

The main shaft measures 28mm OD at the seal. The OD of the old seal case is 46.85mm, and the seal is 7mm thick.

The new seal has an ID of 35mm, OD of 52mm and thickness of 8mm. Any idea if they sent me the correct part and if so, what seal do I have at the front of my tranny? Maybe UKC12?
Or maybe they sent me UKC12...

Any thoughts?

Please go to your local auto parts store, or even better, the local bearing house and show them the old seal. They can match it up to a new one.

It is important to realize when it comes to oil seals and bearings, no engineer wants to create a situation where a custom bearing or oil seal must be used. They will always use a bearing and seal that is commonly available. Granted I've seen where Japanese engineers in the 1960's used a customized bearing more akin to the bearing used on a Mitsubishi Zero float plane, no European or American engineer would ever pull a stunt like that. As such, when looking for parts no longer available from the usual vendors, please do not panic. Instead fire up the other buggy and trot down to visit the local parts counters.
