The panel illumination rheostat has four polls. The wiring diagram shows a red and a red/white wire going to the rheostat but it does not show which polls they attach to. Also, I think I had a black wire attached as well which is not shown in the diagram. Can someone clue me in on the correct wiring for the rheostat?

Two are common with other two so you only use two. No black wire as the rheostat is in series to dash wiring and not grounded.

Thanks for the pic. The black wire turned out to be the ground for the cigar lighter. Putting that on a rheostat post will blow a fuse. Not a good idea.
