Found a 1977 TR7

Located a 1977 TR7 and want to look at it this week end. It’s orange with black/plaid interior and he said black stripes. I have not seen any pictures yet but the owner claims the body is rust free and has only one dent on the rear quarter. He told me it only has 43,000 original miles it starts and runs great but the tires are pretty much rotting off the car. He got it from a lady who took it from her husband in a divorce 15 or so years ago and it just sat in the garage the whole time. Since he bought it they but on a new exhaust which he said was close to $800.00. He did say the seats are rough which seems odd for a car with only 43,000 miles on it. The price is $1000.00 If it is everything he said is can I go wrong on the car? He did say the paint was faded and it would need buffing out but still in good shape.
What do all of you think? Is the price about right or is it a great deal (if as he states in great shape)
I paid more for my 76 that needs work.[:I]
I was thinking I could use the 77 as a template for putting the 76 back together and then sell the 76 and keep the 77.

I paid $1000 for a car that was flooded in a hurricane. I got a lot of parts off the car and then traded it for a set of power coated stock alloys.

I am trying to see it Saturday AM. I just hope the guys not full of BS. I hate to drive 2 hours for nothing but sometimes thats part of the old car game.
I will post up some pictures if I buy it. I am taking my son Clayton ,cash and a trailer. We were going to the world of wheels in Chicago but this is closer and probably more fun.

The standard rule is assume the worst so it will need a respray but if "dent in the rear" doesn't turn out to be a bodyshell shortened 3 foot by a bus & it has really no rust then buy it! Upholstery is cheap compared to body work & if it has a new exhaust as he says then you are unlikely to lose money even if it ends up as a parts car.

I once drove 3 hours to see a "no rust" Spitfire. As soon as I saw it sitting in grass up to its hubs I knew that wasn't going to be the case. Sure enough the floors has all the integrity of wet toast.

My '79 Yellow TCT DHC only has 30,000 miles on it and it has ripped seats. While it is largely rust free there is an area in wheel well that has to be replaced and a small hole in LH B post that has to be cut put and filled. I only paid $100 but that's because he couldn't sell it and needed the space and I lowballed it I couldn't turn it down when he said yes. If the body is good it's worth a $1,000. If not, point it out and tell him it's a parts car.

Steve,

When you edit a post that has a quote, you have to redo the qoute or it breaks apart.

Did you read the page on buying a TR7 from the link I supplied? Here it is again a little more obvious.

Clay I did read it and printed if off and took it with me.

[:D][:D][:D]I bought the car pictures to follow soon. [:)][:)][:)]

She is very solid and very tight and looks like only 44,000 original miles for sure on it. I found oil change notes and other docs in the car that reinforce that mileage.
I hated to do it but I needed to know if it would run so we dumped some gas down a carb and it stated right up and ran great. I was able to drive it out of the cramped area it was stored but it stalled and would not restart. I think it pulled some bad gas into the carbs hopefully no damage was done.
When I got home I pulled off the fuel line and hooked a hose to the fuel pump and ran it to a jerry can. It started right up and ran great. Its smooth and very quite no strange noises or smoke at all. We only ran it a few minutes because I want to change the oil and filter right away the oil looks good but I am sure it is old .
The brakes are barely there so I will need to work on them.
The headlights do flip up and looks like most of the electrics are in working order. The turn indicators do not work nor do the dash lights and the radio is missing but I think I can fix that.
The orange plaid material is deteriorated on the driver’s side seat but the rest of the seat and the passenger side is in very good shape. The orange carpet is faded to tan.
Clayton wants to replace the plaid cloth with leather inserts but I like the plaid for some reason.
I am pretty excited about the condition of the car. I will post up pictures tomorrow.
Thanks for all the info every one
Steve

Ron, great minds think alike.I plan to hit him at 750.00 if it is realy nice and see were it shakes out. I find bringing a trailer along helps the seller know you mean business and 100 dollar bills in hand works well also.
As a side note I am Steve. Clayton is my son. I just made Claytons TR7 my screen name because it is a father/son project

I tried to talk him down but he knew I wanted after it started up and ran so nice and we found the documents in the car showing it as a 44,00 mile car so I gave the full 1000.00 but I think its OK.

I was always hopeless at bargaining too Steve.

Hope you enjoy the car.
