Anyone replaced their speedo cable recently?

I just got under the 7V8 today to replace the speedo cable.

1) The cable passes through a rubber grommit in the floorpan just behind the heater. How does the cable pass through the grommit if the fittings on both ends are way bigger than the hole in the grommit? However, If the hole was any bigger the cable would slop around in it and provide no seal at all.

2) On a UK car does the cable pass just in front of the top of the clutch pedal? I forgot to note the routing of the original cable before removing it.

I've wondered the same about some of the headlight connectors. I concluded the grommets are put on during production. In which case you cut them and then move them to the new part.

I replaced mine a few yeas back, and since I had to bring out the trash anyways , used the occasion to have a peek at my car...... and realized I also don't have a grommet (anymore?) either!


Figuring it must have had one originally, I probably forgot to put it back or never realized it was missing ....Guess I 'LL have to find something generic that fits the hole, proly the best method would simply be to slash a small cut on one side to fit it over the cable and pop it in the hole which should hold it in place somewhat similar to fitting the steering bushing.

For the record on my lhd car ,the speedo cable was fed through the hole on the mid left of the trans tunnel, near the gas pedal and just under the top of the carpet. I also just peeked under the carpet on the right side ( passenger) footwell and notice there was a solid black plug in the same location on the edge of the trans tunnel(could this be a universal stamping for both right and left hand drives???

Thanks guys. I have the original cable and grommit even after 30 years. As you say the grommit must have been slipped over the cable before the ends were crimped on.

The original fitting was a very tight fit on the back of the speedo, so difficult to remove it meant lots of scraped knuckles just to release the clip, hence forgetting to look at the cable route. Rimmers replacement just needs a tug and it unclips, I don't know if that's a good thing or not.

Grommit has been slit as suggested.

I think I had more stretch in me at 30 than this grommit did.[:)] Come to think of it I'm the wrong side of 40 and I'm still more flexible[:D] Didn't feel that way after working underneath the dash last night [:(]though.

When's you new supadoopa S&S website going to be live?

Judging by the mounting holes for the RHD footrest in all my LHD cars that looks quite plausible ...
