Springs (again)

I'm in a dillema over which springs to fit on my TR8. I'm currently overhauling the running gear & suspension. I've got a complete set of poly bushes from Robsport to go on & I've decided on a set of KYB shocks from S&S. I don't want to end up with a harsh ride but do want reasonable handling. According to Robsport the 200lb uprated srings are actually 157lb front & 195lb at the rear. Standard springs are 88lb front & 165lb at the rear.
I was going to stick with standard springs for the comfort & because I don't want to lower the car, however the fronts do appear to be very soft in relation to the rears. I was thinking of using standard rears & then having some 125lb standard ride height fronts made to order. This would give me a similar 40lb difference from front to back that the uprated/lowered ones have but hopefully keep a comfortable ride. Also I'm thinking they may cope with the V8 lump a bit better.
Does anyone have any opinions on whether this set up would work OK?

When you're going for a comfortable ride bare in mind in integral part of that is your tires. On standard tires the fronts are 24 lbs. and I think rears 26 or something like that. The thought at the time was run them at 28. I run mine at 32 to 34 lbs. (as I do with all my cars) giving a firm ride and good handling and feedback. The lower the profile tire the higher the pressure going higher than that. The suspension wasn't designed for that situation giving a very stiff ride. That's with standard springs.

I don't have experience with stiffer springs but can only imagine how stiff the ride must be with this tire setup. They would come in handy going over speed bumps though.

My tyres are 205/60 13" on standard alloys. I think they're at 24 front 28 rear.

How old are the springs you have on? There is a good chance they are a bit tired so even new standard springs will stiffen things up a bit. The uprated springs are only marginally shorter but since they are stronger there is a good chance the car will actually sit higher.

A couple of weeks ago I drove 3 different TR7s & it was an interesting exercise. I find my car, a V8 with stiffened (F=155/R=200 springs), is great for touring but except the front shocks are a bit hard & it tends to 'crash' over bumps. Car #2 was an unrestored V8 DHC with old, very soft springs which I found too bouncy for anything except sedate driving. #3 car was a 2L FHC with suspension set similar to mine & I found this was possibly just a bit better than mine with the softer shocks for public roads.

A sports car should be a bit stiffer than your family car & the 155/200 springs do make a difference without being bone-jarringly stiff. Tuning the shock settings will give you the range of comfort you are looking for.

The springs are 16 years old so are probably a bit knackered. Apparently the uprated springs length will be calculated to retain the standard ride height.
