From my understanding, they should not, they should give out fresh air or I think cold air from air con.

Indeed the four dashboard vents only supply cold/fresh air.

Only thing I can think of is a complete rebuild/redesign of the heater unit ...

I'd stick to the warm gloves [;)]

Wow. I thought mine were broken this whole time. This clears that up![^] There is still a problem though... air leaks through the main vents even when they are closed. What do I have to do to fix that?

Reach way up high on the passenger side of the heater and push the broken nylon lever up towards firewall. It looks like an inverted "V" in this photo. One leg breaks off very easily. (Beans Photo!)

Might be that the foam cover of the air flap has perished.
If so you'll have to dismantle the whole lot to get to the flap ...

The first time I gave my 7 a bit of a rev, [I took her to a sprint
meeting, to see whst she did. Low 17s] the heater matrix it self,
must have let go. On the second run, the vents started spraying me
with green water.

I bypassed the heater, by connecting the rear of the head, direct to
the water pump.

I've had no trouble from the thing since then.

Of course, it doesn't snow here, either.

A set of driving gloves is the answer. That's why you see them listed in British car magazines. When we go on a club run in iffy weather we keep the tops down so we won't be mistaken for a German car club.[:D] As we drive past they say "There goes those crazy British car drivers". [:D] Stiff upper lip...eh what?

I think that is the solution. I know the lever still works because I can still see the vent open and close. So does this mean I have to take the dash off to get to the air flap or is there a better, less painful way of doing it[?]

Another question... I need an A/C compressor for my 7. I tried looking for one a while back but couldn't find one and gave up. I'm determined to get one now. Summer is coming up again and Texas weather is harsh. Where can I get one[?] Do I have to do a conversion[?]

With a powerfull torch or inpection light you should be able to get
a decent impression of the foam cover through the centre vents.

If they need renewing, it indeed is a dashboard out job.
And you'll have to dismantle the heater unit to get at the flaps properly.
