Winter Project Progress

Postby REPLIC8 » 13 Feb 2010 14:08

Having stripped out the underside of my TR8 up to the bulkhead, I've spent the last 4 weekends cleaning, scraping, & painting the floorpan. Got to work the next 5 weekends so the paint will have plenty of time to dry before I start any refitting. I think it's looking pretty good so far, but painting 6 inches above your face isn't easy!! [:)]

That looks super. Bloody awful job to do though isn't it?

How many coats did you give it in the end?

It had been painted before, about 16 years ago, so I cleaned off all the muck & oil etc, sanded any flakey areas & then flatted the entire floorpan. Then 2 coats of primer over the bare patches & 2 thick brushed on coats of top coat. I finished of with spraying a few awkward areas from a spray can.

The engine bay is pretty good, but will be done in the future as another project. [:)]
Doing the important bits first so I can get it on the road for next spring, can't wait to actually get some driving done.

Spent a couple of Sunday mornings cleaing up the gearbox, fitted a new uprated mounting & some polybushes in the remote. Soon I'll be putting bits back on instead of taking them off, can't wait! Still need to decide which oil to put in, read all the threads about it but most of the suggestions don't seem available in the UK. May stick with ATF.

Just a quick update, I've now re-fitted the gearbox, brakelines, fuel lines, fueltank, exhuast hangers & mudflaps. The axle & rear suspension should be done in the next week or so, then it's on to the front end. [:)]

Well that's it, the underside is finished from the bulkhead back. Spent today putting all my shiney new bits back on. I've had the springs coated to match the car, hopefully with the new polybushes all round & KYB shocks it will handle properly again! Got a few jobs to do around the house over the next few weeks then it's start all over again on the front end.[:D]

It all looks to be done to a very high standard. Is the steel transmission tunnel guard a customisation?

I was wondering about that myself. My TR7's don't have it. I thought it might be an eight thing.

Yep, they're a TR8 part, it's a heat shield between the floorpan & the centre boxes of the exhuast. It's not steel, I think it's fibreglass.
