Gearbox mount

Postby nick » 07 Feb 2010 23:05

This picture is from the inside of my '79 DHC 5speed. These bolts hold the gearbox cross member. Mine does not look factory original. Does anyone have a photo how this should look? Maybe Beans since your is apart now.
Also, is the rubber mount available in the US at local parts stores since it is used on other cars? I read a post once stating that but can't seem to locate it.

That bolt set up looks the same as my car, yes they do look a lot like something they dreamed up at the last minute..

The rubber mount is the same as used on some Landrovers. The difference is that the centre hole is 12mm instead of 1/2 inch for a TR7 so you have to drill it out.

Mine's the same. British Leyland engineering at it's best.

I presume your rubber mount has turned into a thick syrup.

Unreal. The other strap is of a different alloy and not the same same pattern. I guess they must be handed[:)] Honestly, they look like something I might have made out some scrap I picked up from the garage floor after sweeping up the Speedy Dry. I recon at the last minute, or due to a fault in existing cars, they decided to change the load path.
Which year Land Rovers used the same gearbox mount?

I'll answer my own question this time. In an attempt to find TKC1044, gearbox mounting, locally I found a list of other applications. Dol 15,18 and Sprint. Don't know which years. But still no equivalent in a US car. Lots of places in the UK that sell this but limited in the US. Wedge shop for one has them but I'm trying to avoid shipping costs. Found a catalogue in one parts store that had more than 100 different mounts so I guess one of those could be adapted.

But it is the original gearbox mounting bracket.
The only thing that doesn't look original to me is the black sealant underneath the bracket ...

I just looked at some pictures of my TR8 coupe dated 8/79 and it has the same exact mount bracket/strap and the sealer too. The transmission mount is sold by The Raodster factory, Moss Motors, Victoria British, British Parts Northwest, and the Wedge Shope. They are any where from $20.00 to $40.00.

I've just looked at Yellow TCT and it has the black goop but not so much. Looks like they put a little around the bolt and it squeezed out when they tightened it, kind of looks like a rubber washer, very tidey. Obviously done to waterproof the hole. Maybe yours was done by the new guy on the line.[:)]
