ok got my new headlamp panel metal 1 bit if i decide to put on new fibre glass wings can i just bolt them on ????

Self-tapping screws hold the wings in place.

One big advantage with these wings... they don't rust!

Are not the original welded wings a structural part ? Not so much a factor on a racing car with a roll cage I suppose. If I were to use the FRP panels I would do something like Marko sugests. There are special panel adhesives available for Corvettes and such that will bond FRP to metal.

had a mad idea this morning went out an bought a spot welder [:D] but thats ok we must have our toys ay boys reason i mentioned about the fibre glass wings is for the mot as i heard that as welded ones i.e metal ones are structural to the integrity of the shell so now i can go 4 either spot weld or adesive n self tapping scews [:D]

My car had plastic front wings for years so you have nothing to fear with regards to the MOT.

i asked a while back about glass fibre wings bonnet and front panel as weight saving and lack of rust and also got a mixed response, as the wings are welded on you would think they are structural, but if your able to buy fibre glass ones..... well one can only assume they are not as structural as maybe we believe.... let me know how you get on with them......

i'm a fan of customising, old style, not corsas....ford pops etc, so whos gonna be first to do a flip front for a tr7 then?????

id love to flip front a tr7 dont know y they didnt do it like the herald or the spritfire would b so much esier an more fun to work on[:)]

and before anyone points it out we know the herald and spitfire had seperate chassis...lol, would need a bit of fettling to make it work but am sure it could be done.........[:D]

is it worth a divorce to mention this idea in the house????

They indeed are, even the front panel is structural, though not as much as the wings.
I'd only use plastic wings and nose panel if the car had a full welded in cage ....

I am sure that plastic wings have been fitted without the car folding up. However, I agree with Beans. If you look at how the unibody is constructed, it is quite obvious that the wing and wheelhouse structure are what locate the strut turret. Now, newer cars I have worked on have an upper beam that runs from the A post to the rad supt. That structure is tied together with sheetmetal stampings into the strut turret and lower frame rails. On these cars the fenders and plastic splash shields are of little structural benifit being held on with a few small screws. The TR7/8 doesn't have this upper side beam or a frt radiator suport. The designers obviously have relied on the metal stampings being solidly spotwelded together to provide strength as a structure. They must have felt it important as the factory repair manual gives precise instructions on where all the spotwelds are to be replaced during a repair.

A flip front TR7 would be wild. Would have to do tubular front cage like the Jaguar E type.

I've seen enough fiberglass to metal adaptations with lots of stress cracks to not even try it. Don't know about modern bonding glues like the Corvette stuff though.
