I need help with engine color choice

Postby Tom M. » 02 Feb 2010 23:52

My Buick V6 donor engine is being rebuilt right now... I have to decide what color to paint it. The "typical" US hot rod color for the engine block is bright orange but I think that will look garish in a Pagaent Blue engine bay.

Maybe dull silver/aluminum with red or black valve covers?

Thoughts?

what colour is the engine orignally??

I'd think repraying it in what ever colour Buick painted would be right.
(keeping it faithful to the marque???)

Ron.

I'm not sure but I believe that the stock Buick blocks had an unpainted "natural" finish. That's what I would do but the block looks a bit worse for wear so I'm thinking about painting it. In one respect painting is a bad idea because you have to protect the finish and scratches etc are more noticeable...

Maybe flat red with chrome valve covers?

Bright orange and blue/grey (pageant) would be close to the Gulf GT40's of the 60's. You could tone it down with blander than bright orange colour like coral or a paler colour in the orange/red spectrum. It would give the contrast without the garish.

Can't go wrong with basic black. Painting it body colour is a bit precious with some exceptions (sorry to those who have done it).

blacks a pretty safe option, or silver, or a darker blue? maybe put a contrasting stripe on the car to match the block colour, painting the rocker covers or chroming?

I've grown used to painting engines black unless there is a real good reason to do otherwise.

The Hemi orange is anything but true Buick, but it looks good with any color car.
This is going in my Chrome Yellow TR7 FHC

Chrome is good, but I don't want too much either.

This was painted from bare block, each piece individually.

I don't know about the "newer" Buicks, but the engine in my '62 Invicta was a light blue. Almost the color of the TR-7 cam cover but a touch lighter yet. It was called the "Wildcat 445" I'm not sure why. I think the actual displacement was something like 401 cu in.
