Interior colors

Postby nick » 30 Jan 2010 16:40

I'm redoing the interior on my '79 DHC. The original exterior color is russet. I think I have a line on some red/black plaid seat covers which were the orignial pattern. The carpet is red but I want to change it to black. Does anyone know if the red/black plaid option came with black carpet?

Nick-

On page 27 of the "Original Triumph TR7 and TR8" book by Bill Piggott, he shows a photo of a coupe with Red/Black seats with black carpet. He says, "Although most with cars with the red checked seats had a deep red carpet, this car has black. It may be a replacement carpet set, or alternatively some cars with tartan seats may have had black carpets as original rather than carpets in matching red or green"

I guess the answer is that it is unknown. According to the same book, Triumph often used what they had so perhaps some of the red seats/black carpets got put into the same car.

If you need material for the red/black seat covers, you can see my post in the Parts section (click here)

Good luck,

Jim

I have helped dismantle four cars with red check seats and door cards.

All had black carpet and looking at the condition of the carpet I would swear that it was the original installation.

All cars were FHC models about 1976 to 1978. I have seen a green check car (4 speed gearbox model) and I think that had black carpet too

I would have thought someone out there would have an original brochure from a dealer with color options. I'll bump this just in case.

The most common original interior for 1980 Russet Brown exteriors was Golden Tan Check (often called plaid). Floor carpet for that interior was a dark brown. My brochures and my car (original owner = me) are from 1980.

Great this is what I need. Does the brochure show that the russet car came with red/black plaid seats and red carpet. That's what mine has but I don't know if I have an original interior. Thanks

No, I don't see that combination (brown with red/black interior) in anything I have.
That doesn't make it impossible though.
You should be able to find the original paint and trim codes on the build plate. With those, you can know what left the factory.

my '78 has red/blk check and red carpets from original. I have the dealer options page that came with the car and it lists
Sun roof
alluminium rims
luggage rack
red carpet

so i assume maybe it was an option??
There are no prices listed for anything on this page though. I found it stuffed in with all the dealer service records and log book from the PO even had the dealer service card and service log book.

I get the idea that russet brown was not a very popular color. And russet brown with red carpet and tartan red seats was even less popular. Well, you have to play the hand you are delt. I guess I'll stick with it.

Actually russet brown exterior paint was quite popular for several years and BL/JRT used it on nearly everything from Triumph, MG and Jaguar (and probably Rover as well). I think it looked best on TR7/8 convertibles. And quite awful on Jaguar sedans.

It does seem that the combination of brown exterior with the red/black check interior is not common.

The original factory paint and interior codes for your car will be found on the build (commission) plate located on one of the doors. The interior code for red and black (with the checked/plaid pattern) is "RAA"
The code for the more common golden tan check is "RAG". And there are others. The codes are listed in quite a few parts catalogs.
